We got to meet so many new people from Meramec and Captain, but we also got to got to meet many high school students who helped us out! All of the activities we did were really fun, but the one that stood out most to me were the BioMed activities. One of the BioMed activities we did was seeing what our heart rate was by attaching sensors to three places on our arms. The sensors were attached to a computer that showed us what our heart rate was. We did something similar in the second BioMed activity. What we did was we held sensor like things that were kind of like nunchucks in our hands. The sensors read our heart rate and shows us what it was. Then they had us do exercise for thirty seconds and then they checked our heart rate again to see what might have happened. Like I thought, our heart rate skyrocketed!!! But the activity that for sure went above and beyond was when we got to see the dissected lamb hearts!!!!!!!!! For safety we put on safety gloves that made our hands all powdery and dusty, and then we got to TOUCH the heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It had a very squishy texture, and it was cut through the middle so we could look on the inside too! The inside looked a little bit like zombie guts, and the whole heart inside and out was a dull, lazy brown.

<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; line-height: 1.38; white-space: pre-wrap;">This year stem day was AMAZING!!!! One of my favorite stations was called pixel press. I think it was called that because we used blocks/cubes and then took a picture of them on ipads. We used a program called bloxels. There were 6 stations- Aerodynamics, Robotics, Math, Department of nature(?) things, Pixel Press, and Biomed.

Once we were done we took a picture of it on an ipad and it became a video game . So Much Fun!!!!! We all worked in groups of 1, 2, or 3. For some reason I was in a group of four. It was strange. The people in my group were Isra (5R), Isabella (5S), Me (5B), and someone from another school.

The math station was walking the same as a bar graph. Now I know this sounds easy but it’s not because a motion sensor picks up exactly how fast you move. That means if you step unevenly then it will pick that up and therefore mess it up.

The first part was using wood blocks to create whatever your instructions said to create. We created a chair, house and bench. The second part was creating a cube If both groups finished then the instructor told the two groups to create a rectangular prism (we failed).

One activity we did was pixel press. You began pixel pressing by using different cubes that represent different colors. It was kind of like mario. When we finished building our world we would take a picture with an iPad and upload it to an app called bloxels. Then we would use bloxels to code what our enemies did and what the powerups gave us. We could choose between walker flyer and sanitary for our enemies and the power ups were jetpack, bombs, health, map, invincibility and shrink potion. We could also add other areas to the levels. I played a level that was mostly coins and lava.

One of our favorite stations was the robotics station. We got to meet some of the Robo hounds (members of robotics club) and they showed us their robot that they made for two this year. It costed four thousand dollars to create. The coolest thing the robot could do was shoot balls into a hoop. They went to Florida for one of their . One of their main sponsors is Bowing. While he was explaining this each person got to try to shoot a ball in the hoop using a controller (controls the robot).

Each cost 5,000 dollars to participate in. Bowing and the Robo Hounds other sponsors pay for the robot and the cost to get in the competitions. At the competition in Florida the Robo Hounds took 6th place. That is pretty good. At the competition in St. Louis they placed 4th. Then the controller person from the Robo Hounds started throwing the balls at us and we tried to catch them. We had a ton of fun at this activity. There were six stations to help us learn more about each. One of our favorite stations was the aerodynamic engineering station. At this station, we made paper airplanes with different designs, and tried to make them go through a hula hoop. It was difficult, and we tried many times. Very few people succeed. If you happened to be one the lucky winners, you received a piece of candy. YUM! To launch the planes, we used cool machines that propelled our planes into the air. Some people were PRO level airplane makers, while others, had copied off of PRO level builders. Many people tried, but only few people succeeded. After the hula-hoop contest, there was another contest, only about how FAR your plane went. Again, many people failed, but only ONE person succeeded. The prize for that contest, was the MOST candy… Each and every one of the people who did not get any candy, were drooling with jealousy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3308028589519119466.post-47708230864735092562016-03-15T09:32:00.002-07:002016-03-15T09:32:36.520-07:00100WC
We got to observe MARS and what was on it, and we got to go to the STAR SHOW and the MAKERSPACE. My personal favorite was the STAR SHOW, because it was SO in-depth, and I thought that it was very cool. The Planetarium is basically connected to the Science Center. When we got off of the bus, I was paired with my friend Ollie. So we got to stick together the whole time! We headed up to the MAKERSPACE first, and it was so cool! There was a build-your-own-ship station, there was a test gravity station where you place the sphere a little tube, you pull a lever, it floats, and then you can try to make ithrough a little hoop. Next to that, there was a MARS exhibit. It included a wheel, with sand. It was basically like a stamp, with a ‘redo’ button.

There was a REAL ROVER! You could control it, and it was super cool! Then, everybody in the grade went to the star show. I was 15 minutes late (Ask me why…) and then I went to the star show. When I walked into the pitch black room, I could literally not see ANYTHING! So instead of the mats that were sprawled out across the floor, I Just sat down on the ground. After the Star Show was over, we were dismissed to go check out little space things, in a room behind us. I found my friends, and then we checked it out together.

We were required to either make a blog post or a trivia with 5 questions. I chose to make a blog post. During the show we learned about Orion,Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. We also learned about the difference between a star and a planet in the sky, stars twinkle and planets are just kind of dull. Also we learned that when you look at mars in the sky at about 6:00 am it always appears red; And we learned about how to find polaris or the north star using Ursa major(big dipper). Before the show we were doing sailboat racing and torturing the teachers on the bridge by standing and jumping on top of the glass windows. Riley C. managed to get satellite rover things to stick its arm out. Cara Bhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12762056655419829678noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3308028589519119466.post-9760274619844254822016-03-01T05:36:00.001-08:002016-03-01T05:40:39.907-08:00the planetarium

the planetarium was really fun, we got split into two groups, one group went to the maker space, the other group went to a place called mission mars. my favorite place was mission mars because we got to control a small rover in a fake mars environment, but if you went over to the glass barricade, the rover there actually moved! i was thiiis close to using it but we had to go. the other place was pretty cool to, we got to see how a rovers legs moved, we made sails ans flew them over vents, and we got to even create our own simulation of a rover on mars! it took us awhile, but we soon managed to do it.we ran out of time again and had to go to a show.

the show was also pretty awesome to, it was all about the sky and how we can see different constellations in the sky. we saw orion, my personal favorite, and the best star name out there, serious.
we learned star from a planet because stars twinkle, planets do not.
there was so many constellations we saw that i never heard about, like one is not a constellation because it's just a line. but finally, we had to go home, we all had to do questions, or do a blog, and i hoped you enjoyed this blog.
When we got there we split up into two groups. One that went to the “ experimental” exhibit and another that went to the Space themed exhibit. One of the activities in the experimental exhibit was boat racing. We designed and made sails using fabric and other various materials. Then we put them on a boat base and raced them. when we pressed the green button air would start shooting out and the boats would start moving. When we switched to the space themed exhibit we saw a lot of pictures but there were a couple of main attractions one was this giant tube with poles on the sides. We would try to climb up the tube. It was surprisingly easy. Another attraction were the workout machines. There was a bike type thing and there was more of a full body workout machine. Overall 5B would be awesome astronauts.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3308028589519119466.post-61521070129565498542016-02-29T18:50:00.005-08:002016-02-29T18:50:56.375-08:00Planetarium By: Iris
The show was very cool and interesting we learned about the constellations, mostly the winter ones because it’s winter. And we also learned some star names. Also if you have read Harry Potter then you would like to know that J.K. Rowling based some names of stars, like Sirius is part of Canis Minor. The small dog and yes that is why Sirius turns into a dog. Before we also had time to explore and you could make a rover move!

Today we went to the planetarium and I had an AMASSING time. If you know me in real life I'm like a JR. astronomer I love, love, looooove, The stars (I'm going to the Kennedy space center in Florida during the summer and I'm going to eat lunch with a REAL astronaut. I'm super exited!) Canis Mojor (The great dog) is my favorite constellation. At the Stl Science center I Got to Control a real NASA rover (sadly not on mars) see a star show, And go to there makers space where i got to make a sail for a small boat (witch I beat every one with using simple physics of course.) and ended up finding that the structure that I built MONTHS ago was still there! me and my reading partner Claudia built a wagon that we pulled everyone around in (not at the same time). Honestly I know that I'm doing this for homework but I love the subject, its the best one in the universe! ha ha, get it? no? well this letter is about astronomy and you know what, forget it.

Thank you for spending some of your precious time to read this.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3308028589519119466.post-91096216213061591132016-02-29T18:24:00.000-08:002016-02-29T18:25:30.696-08:00

The Planetarium was awesome. We watched the stars and the Constellations. It turns out that there is a dragon, big and little bear Constellation and a dog Constellation! I even saw Mars! I also controlled a land rover on (fake) Mars! I can't wait to go back to the Planetarium!

First we explored the Makerspace in the Science Center part of the building. My reading partner and I made a wagon that actually rolled! It was a lot of fun! We also got to see the mission control room that controlled the rover on the other side of the building. It was cool to see and learn about the rovers and drones currently on Mars. Then we got to go see the Mars exibit in the planetarium. We could test different rocks and minerals to see what were in them, got to see landmarks on Mars, and even got to see a rover in action! We also saw a cool elevator designed to look simaler to the inside of a spaceship. Pretty soon, it was time for the star show. I walked up a long set of stairs into a large room simaler to the IMAX. I could see a faint image of stars all around us, but because it was before the show, I could only see about ten or eleven. I was worried that was what it was going to look like the entire show. I grabbed a mat and layed down next to my friends. The lights dimmed as the announcer showed us things like bathrooms and exits. After a while, she made a few more stars appear and started explaining what they were and how they connected. I was kind of sad that the stars were so dim. I started to tune out when something the announcer said caught my attention. She was talking about smog and light pollution, and how the stars we could see on the screen were dim because of that. I got exited. She then took away the light polution and the stars became a million times brighter! Then it got even better! She took away the smog and... Thousands of stars appeared out of nowhere! Some were large and bright while others were smaller and dim. It was so beautiful. I could see a long part of the Milky Way galaxy and I could even recognise some constilations. She explaned more, but I was just flabbergasted at the beauty of the stars. Overall, I loved the field trip and would be happy to go back any time.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3308028589519119466.post-16395407969415473152016-02-08T12:13:00.001-08:002016-02-08T12:13:05.051-08:00Colony fates By Iris

And the Hunting fate tells you how many food units you get or the problem. the Fishing tells you the exact same thing. At the beginning of the orientation when the parents and students walked in some people from Wydown passed out a sheet of paper telling which group you were in. When the orientation started the Middle school principal made an announcement, and greeting students when everybody was situated. She introduced some of the Wydown middle school teachers. After a little bit, three 6th grade kids, that talked about middle school. The first person was really humorous, and exaggerated a lot in an HILARIOUS sort of way. The second person was a girl named Sahi. She is one of my best friends (Ava’s) she sounded pretty good. The third person was a girl named Gabriella. She did pretty good too. I could tell that Ava was excited to do this because she loves to read and write.

There was an option between French and or Spanish. Iris is thinking about doing French, and I (Ava) am thinking about doing spanish, just because I already know how to talk in spanish, because all of the 1st grade students, through 5th grade students, learn the language.

But this isn’t any normal social studies unit, in this unit we are doing an educational stimulation called ‘Discovery’. In this simulation classmates are sorted into teams by teachers. Then the teams pick a colony name, draw a flag and complete assignments to earn points which are later converted to ‘wealth units’, which brings me to the next part.

A sailing phase and a landing phase. During these phases, classmates load 3 ships with goods bought with the wealth units they earned. Once they are finished, they pick sailing fates and landing, hunting, fishing, farming, weather and general welfare cards and fates. Honestly last year 4th graders did a Oregon Trail stimulation and when they loaded their wagons, they had limited space but unlimited money. On the Discovery stimulation, the ships have infinity space but limited money. Oh well...

We parked in the garage and then rushed to the auditorium, not forgetting to grab a pamphlet. I grabbed a seat next to Ava. We waited for the orientation to start by talking about the school. Soon enough, the lights dimmed and the crowd fell silent. Jamie Jordan, accompanied by Doug Weiner, trotted onto the stage. She gave us a welcome speech and introduced us to Mr. Weiner. He will be our grade level principal. She explained the color-code of the pamphlet and sent us on our way to follow the 8th graders to the classrooms. I had social studies first. It was super fun to see Mrs. Miller do all of the crazy costume changes! Next we went to literacy and learned about all the fun projects we'll do. Then in science, we watched a video of kids doing labs and going on field trips. Next, in math, we compared 6th grade to 5th, and discovered we are in for a lot of homework. Then I went to spanish/french to learn how the current 6th graders like middle school languages better than the spanish classes we currently get. Lastly, I went to Main Street to hear what all the elective teachers had to say. There are so many choices! I am overwhelmed by all of it! I saw: Drama, chorus, art, exploratorium, band, orchestra, ELL, and they were all persuading. Middle school is super exiting and I can't wait to start!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com2
