Writing: Personal Essays

Personal Essays
                By Tom
Lately we have been working on personal essays, This is something that we strongly believe in and we can write why we believe this. We are in the idea collecting phase now. Mrs.Barnes wants us to have our topic and our thesis by winter break.
My topic is how little brothers are annoying. My reasons are they embarrass  you, They are violent and they spend more time in your room than in theirs.
    What is your topic?

Science: Pendulums!

Science in 5B
By Sunaina
In Science we are in a unit called Force and Motion first when we started we studied pendulums. Have you ever built a pendulum? Well I have. In my investigation I learned the about the movements of a pendulum by creating a 15 second timer pendulum.

In my experiment we first created a pendulum which was 123 cm long and it swung 7 times in 15 seconds. In my second attempt I tried with a shorter string with 32 cm in which it swung 15 times in 15 seconds. In my observations I learned that the longer the string attached to the weight the slower it swings. The shorter the string the faster it swings. I also learned that you must try an experiment multiple times to get an accurate result.

Book Review: Abduction

Abduction By: Peg Kehret
Book Review By: Emma

This book is about kindergartener Matt, and how his dad who his mother that he lives with divorced and how he got kidnapped by his very own father.

Its a really good book but kind of creepy so if you don’t like scary kidnapping books, this would not be a book you would enjoy. But if you are like me and LOVE creepy scary kidnapping books this is a book you will LOVE.

This book is about how Matt is kidnapped and how his sister and mom are really scared, but in the end things turn out ok.
Peg Kehret writes mostly scary creepy books about kidnapping but they are all really good so I recommend any of her books especially Stolen Children and Abduction.

I like scary/ horror books do you?

Science: Pendulums

Pendulums by Biruk

I am going to teach you some facts I learned from my investigation of double-decker pendulums.

One fact is about the pendulum. When you have a high release point, you get low swings and just because the pendulum is longer the swings will be even lower.  The number of swings when you have a high release point is 7  swings.

Another fact is, when you have an average  release point, you get an average swings but a little less.  The numbers for an average release point is 10 swings.

Another fact is, when you have a low release point, you get a little less swings than the average low release point. The number of swings for a low release point is 12 swings.

If I took the low penny off there would be 0 swings because the pendulum would just drop. If I took the top penny off there would be 6 swings because there is less mass.

Would you like to try this at home someday?  If so, share what you learn.

Book Review: Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes

Peter Nimble and his Fantastic Eyes
By: Jonathan Auxier
Book review written by: Anette

Peter Nimble focuses on a blind orphan, found in a basket by drunk sailors who named him after a misremebered nursery rhyme, he had a raven perched on his basket, and his eyes, sadly were pecked out. So Peter Nimble, alone and hungry in the world, started to teach himself how to steal, for food and clothes, so he can survive. Enter Mr. Seamus, a person who taught many orphan how to steal. Then he met Peter. He taught Peter all kinds of theft, the hard way. Then, Enter the haberdasher. After his encounter with him, and after he, OF COURSE steals from him a box, containing the most peculiar objects. Eyes, each with its own kind of magic.

My favorite part of this book is when peter meets Sir Tode, a "Knight" who has been transformed into an unfortunate combination of a cat, a horse and a human. I also like when they meet peg and the other missing ones. This is a book for those that enjoy action-adventure books, and those of you who absolutly love a sneaky backstabbing type of book.

On Vacation: Traffic in Bogota

Traffic in Bogota
By Miguel

Ever been stuck in a traffic jam, and waited there for half an hour?  An hour?  Two hours?  Three hours?  Four hours?  FIVE hours?  SIX hours?  Well, thats how bad traffic jams get in Bogota, the capital of Colombia.
Once, my family and I went on a road trip that should have taken maximum three hours, but it took us six hours!  The people walking next to the road were going faster than the cars!
And there is traffic jams 24/7, but Sunday is usually calm.  In the mornings, at least!
And there is a thing going on that if someone tells you to turn to the right because there is a traffic jam to the left, and you go to the left, there is no traffic!  And the weird part is that its usually always true.  I would rate traffic in Bogota two of five stars (trust me, it can get sort of fun).

Book Review: I Survived the Nazi Invasion

Book review: I survived the Nazi Invasion by Lauren Tarshis
        Book review by Tom

1st of all I love reading about world war 2 fiction or non-fiction so I might like this book more than you. I would give this book a 4 out of 5 stars because the book has character development and history behind it.
2 Jewish kids who were captured by the Nazis and put them into a ghetto. Then there dad was captured by the Nazis and the only way out is to travel into the woods right next to the ghetto.
