Victory on the Slopes

     Victory on the Slopes
                                                                                           By:Ethan
Hidden Valley was a new experience for me. I had never been skiing before. When we first got to Hidden Valley we watched a safety video. I payed close attention because it was my first time. When we finally got to the locker room I grabbed my size boots and they were broken so I went back to get new one’s that weren't broken. By the time I got back and got in line to get my ski’s the line was very long. By the time I finally got my ski’s some people were done with ski school.
I was super scared when I got on the snow. But after a couple of minutes I realized hey I’m not that bad at this. After that I whizzed through ski school until it was time for lunch.
Lunch was very small. We got a piece of pizza and the choice of a drink with baby carrots. I thought I was going to starve but thankfully my mom packed me a snack if I got hungry.
When I was done with lunch I went back on the slopes. I couldn’t believe it I was done with ski school. I went to the little lift to get practice going on the lift. I am scared of heights so even though it wasn’t that high I was still really scared. After one or two times I started to get the hang of it. I started to go to the rope tow. There was a super long line because everyone kept falling. I did that a couple of times and then I went on the mini lift to get some practice before I went on the big lift. I did that a lot and before I knew it all the schools had to leave. It was just me and my dad having fun skiing. My dad took me on the giant lift and I was super scared. I am afraid of heights and the lift kept stopping.
When we got to the top I decided to go on the less steep hill to start because it was my first time skiing. I tried to pizza stop on my way down like the people at ski school taught us but it wasn’t stopping me. I was going as fast as a rocket and I couldn’t stop finally the pizza stop slowed me down enough to where I could just fall back and I wouldn’t hurt myself. After that my dad taught me how to hockey stop I went on the little lift some more to practice. My dad told me I could go down one more hill and then we would have to leave. I chose the big hill. I started out really slow but then I went down like a pro using my new knowledge on how to hockey stop. We left when I got down the hill. That was the best field trip ever! I will never forget how much fun I had.

One Little Word - Ethan

My one little word is passion. I chose passion because I think that every one should have a passion. Whether it's a passion for sports or school or reading. I have a passion. Do you have a passion? A passion is just anything you really love. For example I like to watch movies but it's not a passion because I don't really love it, but I love playing golf so it's one of my passions.

My passion is basketball. Actually that is only one of my passions. I also have a passion of football. I definitely love basketball more though. I love basketball so much because it is so fast paced and you need to be pretty good to keep up with everyone else. I never really think about this but I think I should and you should. What is your passion or if you do not have one you should try to find one. Depending on your personality you may like something more peaceful like reading or something more active like basketball.

CLAYMO

                                                                                    CLAYMO   By: Ethan

Today CLAYMO was amazing. Part of it was that me and my fellow CLAYMO partner were very prepared. We knew who was saying what and what was going to happen at what time. Another reason we felt that it was so amazing was that our group really stayed on task and that they were participating in the conversation. We thought are final poster (mural) looked really good because everyone contributed and knew what to do. Usually our group is a little more wild because my fellow partner and I aren’t usually as prepared. I feel like my group really got the message today and that everyone at the end had a better understanding of courage then when they first got there. I think even some members in our group were showing courage. For example one student in my group speaks very little english and today I could tell she was showing courage by trying to talk to me even though it might have been scary because she doesn't speak our language.
A goal I have is to continuing being prepared physically and mentally because it can be scary leading a group sometimes. One way I will try to do this is by making sure I go over the script once or twice the night before. Another way I want to do this is by creating a better relationship with my partner because that way I know if I mess up she’s got my back and that would make me feel a lot better about making mistakes. I also want her to know that if she messes up that I have her back and that should help her feel better if she makes a mistake. I have learned a little bit about myself from this experience and one thing I learned is that I am a better leader than I thought I was, and you have to be to do something like this. For example I have a little kid that doesn't speak english so I have to help her sometimes even though we can't communicate very well.

Would it be scary for you if you had to lead a CLAYMO group?

100 Word Challenge :Ethan

It was Halloween night. My friends and I had traveled way too far off the path are parents told us to take. “Do you think this is a good guys?” It was Butch. The big whiner. Without answering we kept walking. None of us wanted to admit it but we were really scared. We saw a light up ahead so we ran up. Sure enough there was a small hut with a light inside. We knocked on the door and a man came out. He was holding a knife and smoking a cigar. We looked down. There it was. “Skeleton!!!!!!!”

Personal Narrative - Hovercraft by Ethan

Hovercraft
                                                                                             By: Ethan
Building good relationships with your family is important. I’m lucky enough to have a great one with my grandpa.
We get on the highway. VRRM! I hear the sounds of motorcycles I.’m not very exited. I think about what I’m going to do today by myself because my grandma is probably at a book talk or at church. I have a great idea I’m hoping my grandpa will have time to do it with me today.
I think of all of this while a blur of colors blows by me. It looks super cool a mixture of green and blue from the sky and trees. My grandpa is very fun to be with when he doesn't have to work.
One time when I was 5 I went over to grandpa’s house. My mom dropped me off at the front door like usual. But this time my grandma came to the front door. When I got inside I didn’t see my grandpa so I knew he was working. My grandma snuck up behind me and said “I have to go to church. I can turn the T.V. on and make you some popcorn if you want.”
“Ok” I said. Pop! Pop! I hear the popcorn in the other room. so for the next 2 hours I sat on the couch wishing my grandpa didn’t have to work. When my grandpa is here we usually play a lot of pingpong. I am lucky enough to have a great grandpa who is very funny and kind. I have always dreamed of being able to build things with him in the future.
We pull into the driveway and I see my grandpa coming out of the door my mom drops me off. “Have fun E”, she said.
“Love you too” but she doesn't hear me thankfully otherwise I probably would have been grounded. I get up to the front steps and hug my grandpa.
We go inside and I take in the smell. It smells like fresh baked cookies. I think well grandma’s home or was a couple of minutes ago because my grandpa doesn't bake. I ask him if grandma is home and he told me that she is asleep. It was then that I ask him if we can build a hovercraft if he doesn't have any work to do. He says “let's do it!” He knows I love when he says it because it sounds just like the Nike quote just do it.
When we get outside we go into the garage. The garage is always cramped and dirty but there is a small work bench with a bunch of tools. I love that tiny workbench. I love it so much that I almost ran up to it and hugged it. We got to work. VROOM! The saws were so loud I thought I might go deaf. didn’t realize how long we had been working. “Grandpa how long have we been working?”
About 2 hours” he replied. I stifled a curse, my mom would be back soon. After that we worked as fast as we could. We didn’t need to talk are hands did that for us. We were like 2 well oiled machines that were programed to work together. SCREECH! My mom pulled into the driveway. I hadn’t even tried it out yet. I needed a distraction, I thought for a moment, Grandma! “Wait one moment grandpa I will be right back.”
I went to go find grandma, I ran down the hall. There she was on the computer. “Grandma I need your help.”
“What for?”
“I need you to start a conversation with my mom so Grandpa and I can finish what we're building.”
“Fair enough, I’ll be right there.”
“Thanks, your the best.” I run back outside and back into the garage. We started working on our hovercraft again but this time are hands were like fire spreading in a forest fire. I worked furiously because my grandpa was starting to get tired and he can’t work very fast when he is tired. “Grandpa are you okay?” A minute later he responds with an I’m good. I see my grandma come out, she has two cups of honey flavored tea and chocolate chip cookies in her hands.
We put on the finishing touches.
I run back inside to tell them that were done, and that I want them to come and watch. I could tell my mom was just getting comfortable because she was reluctant to get up, but she did. when they got outside I put the hovercraft on the driveway and turned it on.
Timeout! Let me clear something up before we get to the end of my AWESOME story. This isn’t a very cool hovercraft like the one’s in star wars but you do what you can with limited resources and time, but I’m tellin ya if we had more time because of my awesomenis it would've looked better than any star wars hovercraft guaranteed.
Back to the story I turned on the hovercraft and it started to hover. I think it’s really working. I was so excited that I almost ran into a car. I was having so much fun I didn’t even realize how much time flew by. “Come on E” my mom said. I hustled back to the garage to help clean up. “Can I keep it grandpa?”
“Sorry buddy, maybe next time.” He says, But that's alright with me because I will always have it in my heart.

100 Word Challenge: Ethan

She was staring me down like a hawk. Even though she is only 3 she scared me.

There was 1 piece of cake left. Without thinking I took the last piece. No one noticed that I did it until I heard the scream. It was the highest pitched scream I had ever heard. She wouldn’t stop crying. The whole room went quiet, people ran in from the other room’s. My aunt and uncle couldn't get her to stop. I realised what I did and felt extremely guilty. What is the moral of the story? Don’t take your cousin's birthday cake.

100 Word Challenge: Ethan

Today a giant bee flew into town, destroying 90% of the citizens. Little people, with big shoes, meanwhile big people with little shoes, had a little bee which destroyed 90% of town. It was a nightmare. Shoes went flying. Men and women were crying. It was dreadful. Then, an army of grasshoppers, came to hold off the bees. They fought well, until the bees figured out that if they sting them it kills themselves, as well as the enemy. Then mosquito mercenaries began to insert their tradozones into anyone who wasn't paying them. It was downright, a battle of the bugs.

100 Word Challenge: Ethan

I prized the solid gold egg that I owned. You're not going to believe me, but it started raining eggs from giant animals that were hopping, somehow, on the clouds. So, it started raining eggs, and everyone was grumpy and miserable after the tractor incident, then solid gold eggs cheered them up. Until they started crashing through the roofs, and knocking people out. There was another problem. My egg got lost. I searched everywhere, but I couldn't find the egg! I was doomed. That was until a golden egg hit me on the head, and I blacked out immediately. I never liked eggs again. The End.

100 Word Challenge: Ethan

So, there was once this, well, I can’t tell you what it is yet, but, patience is a virtue. So any way, um, Thing! Yeah! I like that name. So, Thing was trying to get to his house in the not-so-peaceful village of Singtan, which was a mess after the tractor incident. The problem was, his house had been demolished. He had tried to get home. Too late. “But, but I thought Ihad enough time to stop the tractor!” He whimpered. No! He screamed. Oh, and by the way, he was a snail. So, how would he have stopped the tractor?!

I have recieved 1,000,000,000,000 medals for my service at the Day Watch. If you would accept me, I may or may not be a great, great service to you and your corporation.

100 Word Challenge: Ethan

The tractor was pushing through the earth, at full speed. Help! Help! Help! The people inside screamed.
But no one heard them.

In the cozy little town of Singtan, there was an eerie silence. The boy who was afraid of water had just been buried. Like I said, there was a silence. A silence disrupted all too suddenly by a tractor flying over the hill, engines screaming in protest, the worst were the screams. Help! Help! Help! And more blood-curling screams resounded around the alleys of Singtan.
Suddenly the town erupted. Literally erupted. The town blew up. The people in the tractor died. Bye

100 Word Challenge: Ethan

The shadows shrank back in the light of the ultraviolet
beam of ray light. On the tiny island of Skorghill, the thing was pulsing with blinding, scalding everything that it touched. Trees were falling, stones were eroding. And through it all, the birds were yelling. Actual words. Birds saying words. WORDS! "Good day" " Hello sir.
but the words were stolen right out of their mouth by the thing the one and only thing.

100 Word Challenge: Ethan

There was once this kid that hated water. One problem. He lived on an island called Singtan. And in case you didn't know, islands are surrounded by water. So he lived as far away from the water, and that had to bbe the direct center of the island. He was always paralyzed with fear. He ate, slept, and did every thing in this little circle that symbolized the center of the island. He lived happily in fear, until it started raining. He felt like every drop scalded his skin. He searched for refuge everywhere but allhe could see was water that "scalded" his skin. Then he died.

Book Review: Ranger's Apprentice

Rangers Apprentice

The Rangers Apprentice is an exciting fun-filled series, with tons of action and adventure to spare. In it, a boy named Will is apprenticed to the legendary Ranger Halt.
To be a Ranger, you must have the following talents: Stealth, speed, agility, intelligence, and skill with a bow. In the beginning, Will had none of these talents.  His one good skill was climbing. It is interesting to watch Will grow as a Ranger as the books progress.

Have you read the Ranger's Apprentice?

Book Review: Michael Vey

            Michael Vey by Ethan

    Do you like electricity?

If yes Michael Vey by Richard Paul Evans is your series. In the book, there is a boy named Michael Vey who has electrical powers. I don't mean, 'Bring lightning out of the sky' electrical powers, but when he was a baby he was put through a machine called the MEI. In the begining, 500 kids were put through the machine, and 17 survived.

The MEI ran on electricity and was supposed to remove electrical defaults from the body, but instead it increased the amount of electricity giving the 17 electrical powers while they are hunted by the scientist that created the MEI. I'll let you read the book to figure out the rest.

Hour of Code

Hour of Code

By: Ethan

Recently our teacher introduced us to a website called Hour of Code. On this website you learn a basic java script. You can program Angry Birds, Plants vs Zombies and many others.
There are 3 basic commands: forward, left and right, but as you get more advanced you get repeat until pig and repeat five times, and so forth. I’ve only been on a couple times but it’s fun.

    Do you like programming?

39 Clues

                  The 39 Clues

by Ethan

Recently, I read a series called: The 39 Clues. The first book instantly hooks you in, with an astonishing beginning, and the rest slowly yanks it in. By the last book, I was amazed. The end is amazing, but unexpected.
The main characters are: Dan- a hyperactive 11 year old, and Amy- a book loving 14 year old. The book begins with them at their grandmother's funeral, and I won't reveal anything else.

Do you like adventure books? If yes, this is your book.

Much Ado about Middle School

      MUCH ADO ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL

Recently, all the fifth graders, from all of Clayton, came to Wydown to see a play. The play was called: Much Ado About Middle School. My mom told me that Shakespeare had written a play called: Much Ado About Nothing. So, it was like they were suggesting middle school was nothing! Haha!
Anyway, in the play, there was going to be a dance called: The 16th Annual Super Sweethearts Extrava-Palooza, and these two boys have to make everyone like each other, and, well, it's hard to explain.
There was one point in the play I didn't like. See, I moved from Ladue to Clayton, and those two schools are rivals. So, at one point, a kid's parents wouldn't let her go to the dance because that boy went to Ladue. So, do you think I liked this? Of course not!!! But, other than that, it seemed okay.
