Reading: Time's 2015 Inventions

TIME Magazine Inventions

In class Mrs.Barnes has been reading too us from The TIME Magazine about new inventions or inventions that are coming soon. I found the hoverboard SUPER COOL except it is pretty impractical because it only hovers a inch above the ground and only has a battery life of 15 minutes. There is also a 3D Printer  which prints CARS and EDIBLE CANDY!!!!!! No, I’m not joking I’M VERY SERIOUS AND YOU’D BETTER BELIEVE IT!!! You can look it up for yourself and see.

I think its really awesome the stuff people have invented I could NEVER do it. Its really cool and some of the stuff is funny like the Selfie Stick LOOK IT UP! If you are looking for cool inventions also look up the 3Doodler and Anki Drive.

Hello Fellow Blog Reader!,

This is Ariana reporting. On wednesday an author came to our school. Her name is Kate Klise. She has written tons of fab books! She is a very good author and works with her sister to publish her books . Her sister Sarah  M. Klise is the illustrator to her books. Unfortunately only Ms Kate Klise came to our school. I fully love Mrs.Sarah M. Klise’s illustrations. My favorite book by this cool couple is… Well, I lOVE all their books. But I have to admit my favorite is The fourth book in the 43 old Cemetery Road series. (The phantom in the post office)

    Together they written TONS of childrens books and chapter books. Kate Klise has written; Regarding the fountains, Regarding the sink, Regarding the bathrooms, and Regarding the Bee’s. She has also written; Dying to meet you, over my dead body, till death do us bark, the phantom in the post office, Hollywood dead ahead, and greetings from the cemetary. She has also written chapter books that are not in a series such as; Letters from Camp, Grounded, and Home Sick. These are only some of her chapter books for kids my age. There are more chapter books. Let alone picture books and early readers chapter books. I highly recommend these books for anyone! Literacy: Kate Klise Visit

             KATE KLISE VISIT

This week the author Kate Klise visited Glenridge. She had a lot of funny stories to tell like when she got a bad haircut.

    In class we read her book "Dying to meet you" and it was really good. Kate Klise also told us that instead of using a story mountain for our stories think of a clock. We got to see some of her notes and drafts for books and they looked really messy. It must take a long time to make a story.

Literacy: Non-Fiction Reading

Non-fiction Reading

    This month our class has been working on a non-fiction unit in reading. Non-fiction is about something that is true or really happened. Non-fiction topics vary from sharks to Martin Luther King Jr. We got partners and were asked to select a non-fiction topic that we were both interested in. It was like a book group and we met and talked about what we read  almost every other day.

    There are two different types of non-fiction you could read. The first type of non-fiction you could read is informational. This kind of book has text boxes, pictures, subtitles, glossaries, indexes and table of contents.

The second type is narrative. This time the book is written as a story but still has facts in it about the topic. So I ask you this, what kind of non-fiction do you read?www.flickr.

2015 Inventions

    As a class, we have been reading about new inventions in 2015 in Time magazine.  The inventions were divided into four sections: the future, for the good, play and technology. I think the “future” section had the best inventions.   

    One of them was a hoverboard which hovers one inch above the ground, only over copper or aluminum. Another one was a 3D printer, which prints edible candy, shoes and a small car. Also, there was wireless electricity so you wouldn’t run out of battery.

    Yesterday, Kate Klise came to visit us!Kate Klise is the author of all the 43 Old Cemetery Road books, and her sister, Sarah Klise, illustrates the book series. I find it VERY interesting that they can work together...... me and my brother wouldn't last A DAY. She told us her first story was about a mouse, who loved Cheetos, and he went to all the towns and stole Cheetos, and at the end he had all the cheetos in the world.  Kate was really young, and she had given the book to her other sister as a gift, and she woke up and found it in the trash.  Her first rejection. But it helped her grow.

    One thing she taught us was the story circle. Imagine a clock. The beginning is at 12'o clock, the problem is at 3 o'clock, the journey is 3 o'clock to 7 o'clock, the OH NO( when the problem appears) is at nine, and the AHHA( where they figure out the problem), and the end is at 11. She told us the mountain didn't work because you're saving everything for the middle, but with a circle everything is balanced and nothing is boring. I like this idea, do you?

On Monday, December 16 Kate Klise came to visit us.  She is an author who has written lots of books.  In class we read dying to meet you.  It was very good and funny.  Kate Klise showed us many things.  She showed us a bunch of her books.  She even read one.  It was called Stand Straight Ella Kate.  It kind of sounds like it’s about her because the book is called Ella Kate and the author is named Kate Klise, but it’s not about her.

She told us about the circle plot for a story.  It is the main character first.  Then the problem.  Then the journey for a long time.  Then there is the aha moment.  Then the conclusion.  She also told us about her bad haircut story.  All her friends in class had gotten there hair done so for her birthday her dad took her to where he got a haircut and she got a boy haircut.  She was funny.  Did you like Kate Klise?

Author Review: Jerry Spinelli

    Jerry Spinelli is an author that wrote our last read aloud book Crash.  He is a very detailed author with many books out (Mostly Realistic Fiction). He is an author that I very much enjoy. My favorite book that he’s written is Loser.

    I’ve read 2 of his books I’ve loved both of them(Crash and Loser). I’m currently reading one of his books called Manic Magee.

I am in Invisible Lines.There are also Loser and some others.We have to write our thoughts in our reading notebook.Everyone had to read to chapter one in their book as homework.

My Favorite Book Series by Manny

My Favorite Series of Books by Manny 

    I enjoy reading series during IDR and at my house. You get to have a cool feel of the characters and how they grow from the beginning to the end. I love to read them and there are many different kinds, of course. Realistic fiction series, fantasy series, science fiction series, many kinds. So I’m going to share my 3 favorites.

3: Goosebumps. The author is R.L. Stine. I love Goosebumps even though you can’t really relate to the horror. I’ve read so many and loved every single one. I have so many memories from every single one. My favorites in the series would have to be Welcome to Dead House, Don’t Go to Sleep, Say Cheese and Die!, and Night of the Living Dummy. The series includes 62 books. There are different characters and different story plots in each one.

2: Matched. The author is Ally Condie. I love Matched because it had romance, and it was exciting and very thrilling. It was a trilogy, and my favorite in it was the first one: Matched. The genre is young adult, science fiction, and romance. The first book is one of my favorites EVER!!

1: Sammy Keyes. The author is Wendelin Van Draanen. I love Sammy Keyes so much! It’s the only reason why I LOVE mystery. I’m planning on reading more mystery because of this amazing series! My favorite characters are Sammy and Marissa, and my favorite books are Sammy Keyes and the Search for Snake Eyes and Sammy Keyes and the Skeleton Man. The series includes 18 books. All have mysteries.

My Favorite Genres

    I’m here right now to share some of my favorite genres in books and reading. I love to read! Fantasy, realistic fiction, poetry, anything! Except historical fiction. But I love to read, and in this next paragraph, I’m gonna share my favorite genres.

    Well first, I love realistic fiction! For a long while, it was all I read. StarGirl, Jake and Lily, and a lot of others! I like realistic fiction because it’s really cool how you can relate to the characters in life situations. The next genre is adventure. Some books in the adventure genre I’ve read are Warriors, Geronimo Stilton, and last but not least The Land of Stories; The Wishing Spell. I’m not a fan of survival adventure, but I like it to have a little sports in it. I like adventure because it’s always exciting and urges you onward in the book. The last genre I’m going to share with you is mystery. I love mystery! It really pushes you to read more, like in adventure. Some mystery novels I’ve read include the A to Z Mysteries, and Sammy Keyes. I like mystery because you feel like you can predict and have a feeling of who stole what, or who did this or that.

    Well, those are my favorite genres in books. I love these all, and I’ll always take time to read them.

The Anticipated Book #2

    Hello there. Today, I’m going to talk about a book that I really wanted to read for quite some time. It’s called Tunnels by Roderick Gordon. It’s gonna be really good too. Tunnels is such a unique name for a book! Don’t you think so? Anyways, I’m really excited that I have this book in my grasp to read whenever I want to!

    I’m guessing the book is about this guy named Will and no one pays attention to him, I think. Then his dad dissapeared, and he and his friend try to find him. Like I said, I’m not completely sure, but that’s what I remember of it.

    I’m so glad I have the book. It’s a long one, but that’s good, because I need something to keep me up once I continue to wait for Brunette Ambition by Lea Michele. It’s a six book series, and soon I’ll be on my way!

The Anticipated Book

The Anticipated Book by Manny 

    I have been waiting a long, long, long time for a book to come out. That book is called Brunette Ambition by Lea Michele. The book is a part memoir, style guide, and guide to life. I don’t really care about the fashion, but I care about the memoir and life guide. I still have to wait a long time for it. It comes out in Barnes and Noble and bookstores all around the world on May 13. I am so excited! I’ve been waiting for so long, it’s gonna be great!

    I have always loved Lea Michele’s work in Glee, and her singing. She’s wondrous, incredible, and fascinating. Especially with her beauty! I can’t wait to see what she has in store for this new book of hers.

It will be so exhilarating to learn more about her work, life, and behind the scenes Broadway stories from her lead in the musical “Spring Awakening”. Once I wrap my arms around the book, it’ll feel like victory!

Have you ever heard of a book called Blood on the River. Well If you have not read Blood on the River just sit back and relax when I began. It all starts in England with a twelve year old named Samuel. The book starts with a little legend or myth from the natives. Samuel is a thief with a dead mother and father. So he begins with really no one to trust and so he sleeps in the dump and having a really bad time but really he does not know that it was a beginning of an adventure.
   
Samuel soon gets in very trouble which nearly got himself killed but he ends up in an orphanage. But a few months later he was chosen by a man named Reverend Hunt to set out to sail to the new world. I don't want to give out any spoilers but just to say he ends up in the colony Jamestown and faces many new challenges and new friends.

Reading: T Charts

    In reading, we've been doing T charts for our IDR book, and our read aloud book. I liked doing the T charts. It's an opportunity to our out your thoughts about your book.
    In the T charts, you need to separate the page into two, using a line to divide it. Then, you label each part with, What I Know, and What Questions I Have. It was very fun to do. Reading is one of my favorite things to do, but a book is not complete if you don't have any thoughts about it. That's why T charts can help people with that. Did you like doing the T charts?

Reading: Tips on Finding Books

 Tips on Finding Books by Manny 

    These are some tips for finding a book to read. Some people struggle with that. And other people find books easily. But my voice rings to the people who struggle with finding a book to read. So, let me tell you how.

    The first tip on finding a book to read is finding an author you’ve liked. If there is an author you love and they have written other just right books for you, then read those! I read Smile, a graphic novel, and I read another book by the same author. It was called Drama. The next tip on finding books are when you have to find a genre you like. If you’re a fantasy lover, then you might want to read some other books that are fantasy. You could take a big stretch with going to a new genre, but I think that’ll be too much of a risk.

    Those are my tips on finding books to read when you’re having trouble with that. I gave you two really good tips. I hope you will use them in the future. I can be sure you will.

Starting Book Groups

    5B is about to start book groups. We all knew what group we were going to be in on Tuesday. I found out at P.E because someone told me what group I was in when I specifically told that person not to. Wow. What a DUMB thing to do. I’m in The Fighting Ground book group along with Mya, Quinn, and DJ. Our assignment was to read from page 3-12. Our book doesn’t have chapters. It just shows time to split it up. By the way, all the other book groups have chapters except the Diary of whatever group. Not that your group is whatever, it’s just the book. I kind of hoped I would get True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle because it sounded great, and a book like that, I would only read if I had to. That is because the words are small and it would take a while to get it done.

    I liked the idea of The Fighting ground. A boy who learns to how to be a true fighter as he grows up. I think it sounded cool. Did you like the plot of The Fighting Ground? I’m glad I’m in the book group though. Are you happy with what you’re in?

    Book groups are something I love to do. It is so fun when you get to dig deep and think about a book with a couple of friends. I just love to do it. Do you like book groups? When you have friends with you, it makes it all better. I can’t wait to get farther into the book group.

Book Group Activity

    On a magnificent Friday, we didn’t have IDR time. We had book group stuff. We were all sitting on the carpet, listening to our 5B teacher, Mrs.Barnes. She had a short book talk about each book. Most of us were mostly into the Fighting Ground book, when hearing Mrs.Barnes talk about it. So after her short book talk, we all went to our desks as some Mrs.Barnes passed the books out. We had this thing where we had to read the beginning the book, but we only had 3 minutes to do so. The books were Witch of something I forgot, Fighting Ground, some Dear America nonsense, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, and the Sign of the Beaver.

    As we got to our desks, Mrs.Barnes let us know when it was time to read one of the books. I personally would be fine with Witch of whatever, Fighting Ground, and the True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. I HATED the Dear America nonsense! It was so bad and diary type of writing is not my jig. To end on a positive note, I am really happy to start book groups again. Are you?

Drafting and Revising

    Drafting and revising is what we’re doing in hardcore writing workshop. Many people have been working hard. I was really working hard on typing up my essay about Frozen and why all people should watch it. Revising is a very boring stage. But luckily we don’t work on it as a class, because that takes too long. But I have 3 more paragraphs until I’m done with my typed up draft.

   Drafting is a fun stage. Mrs.Barnes let us skip a step for the kids students who were drafting to go to the NEO. It would take too long anyways to draft and THEN go to the NEO. I can’t wait to see how far I get with my persuasive essay. Revising really makes the whole thing better and I hope it will make mine grow and blossom into a whole chunk of facts. I just really love to finish drafting. It feels really good when you’ve finished. All the hard work just pays off. Although there’s more hard work to go.
