The two men carefully looked at the gigantic and fuzzy creature; it's black and yellow back terrifying them. Still, they had to find out what this was. The name they gave it was Bumble B. The men wear white suits and always keep a first aid kit with them just in case they get hurt. The town of Tinysota is very concerned about this fury beast. They have never seen anything like it and are sure they never will again. The research will still go on and continue its search for the answer to the mystery of the Bumble B.

Shuffle, shuffle.
I heard it in the cupboard one afternoon when I got home from school. I cautiously walked over to it and pressed my ear against the wooden door. Shuffle, shuffle. I heard it again. I was curious and when I opened the cupboard door, my little brother jumped out with paint smeared on his face. He had feathers in his hair and had on fake, clip-on earings. He shouted a war cry and I knew he was trying to be a Native American. His class was studying Native Americans and social studies was his favorite subject. I got myself a snack and hugged him hard.

The little chick had just hatched after its mother had nursed the egg for more than a month. One day the mother was away and I got the chance to look into the nest. I looked for the speckled shell but I couldn’t find the egg. The chick was very small and fluffy. I put out my hand and the chick surprisingly snuggled against it. Its body was warm and I could feel its heart beating fast. When I got down from the nest, the mother returned with a mouthful of worms. The mother chirped something that sounded like “Jooey”. Its the perfect name I thought.

Grandpa Mac was in the hospital trying to recover from his stroke when my family had gone to the Bahamas for spring break. Then my mother got a call saying that Grandpa just suffered a stroke as soon as we reached our hotel. My parents insisted that we leave for the hospital right away. I reluctantly packed my bags and soon we were on a plane flying home. We ran into Grandpa’s hospital room. When I saw him, he didn’t remember me. Tears welled up and I knew I should have told him how much I loved him, but back then I thought I had enough time.

I would definitely be willing to become a Night Zookeeper. If Nilth is a land that has no creativity then we can’t let them destroy us. Then the Night Zoo will never have anymore fun. The animals that live in the Night Zoo are probably quite rare, and If we don’t stop Nilth then the generations after us will never be able to live to see these mystical animals. It wouldn’t be fair that we would be alive to go to a once in a lifetime trip while the generations after us couldn’t. I’m willing to become a Night Zookeeper.

Social Studies: Discovery Simulation

In social studies, our class is studying the thirteen colonies and colonization. So we do this packet called the Discovery Packet. For the first few pages we make markings on maps and we even make our own little island following some expectations. Then we got to have our own colony. We would pick sailing fates and sail to the New World.
    When we reached our destination, our colony had too choose one piece of land. We also had to pay for it. That was why we were earning money before. Fake money of course. Once we chose our piece of land, we started to choose fates. They would decide our weather, hunting, farming, fishing, and general welfare. Soon we would start trading, and fighting. At the end a winning colony and they would get prizes. we are on the last round and everybody wants to win. I hope our colony does!

Theo wanted to know how the earth really came to be. So he did. But he got a fantasy book from the library instead of non-fiction.  “ Long ago the earth was no more than a tiny speck. Then suddenly a  really tiny tractor from the future and started digging through the earth enlarged it. Then suddenly the earth came to be. All caused by the little tractor.”, said Theo. “ WOW! THe world came to be by a tractor from the future!” he shouted. “ Be quiet!”, somebody next to him hissed. But he just grinned and walked out of the library not knowing a thing.

One day, Maria walked into her backyard when she saw a light. She crept up it as it got brighter. Suddenly, she was blown off her feet. When she woke up it was morning. “ What is going on?”, she wondered. Later she went outside again and found a book on the grass. In it was everything she needed to know. Two spirits had been arguing for a long time. They were in her backyard when they saw her coming. They decided that they would rather get along than explain everything to her in the one language that she understood. She gave a sigh of relief.

Book Review: Esperanza Rising

Esperanza Rising by Daboh 

        

Esperanza Rising is the kind of book where you just can’t put it down. It is about a girl who thinks her life will be perfect forever. Her family is rich, her father owns a lot of land, and she has tons of servants. Esperanza’s family was always nice to their servants so they always kept working for the Ortegas ( Esperanza’s family). Everything is just too perfect for things to suddenly go wrong.

Then suddenly there is a tragedy that forces she and her mother to move to California. She is in no way prepared for the harsh conditions there. Then of course things get worse. Every single day, she must work hard until her fingers are raw if she is to set things right.

Will Esperanza make it through or will she finally break down?

One day, Tina arrived at school with a surprise waiting on her desk. There was a piece of paper that told her about the 100 Word Challenge. Every week there would be a challenge and she has to write following the challenge and using a hundred words. She was given five words: grand, pink, gorilla, bicycle, and laughed. Plus this tme she had to write with 105 words!
    Then she had an idea! She pulled out a pencil and notebook. "In the GRAND forest, I saw a GORILLA trying to dance on a BICYCLE with a PINK tutu and I LAUGHED.

It was time for the presents. “Open mine first!”, my sister yelled. I opened hers. It was a  sparkly notebook. “Every year, it’s the same?” My brother Tom, shakes his head at my sister. We all laugh when she nods confidently.  Then I open an envelope filled with a wonderful surprise. “We’re going on a cruise!!”

    We’re on board having a nice dinner when the ship starts to shake really hard. I’m flung off the ship into icy coldness. Everyone is under water trying to reach above the surface BUT ALL WE COULD SEE WAS WATER.

The Winter Olympics

                 The Winter Olympics

The Winter Olympics have a lot of different sports. One of my favorite is figure skating. Each skater almost dances to the center in swift strokes after skating a couple laps. They get in their position, and then wait for the music to start. Most of the time they do some moves with their body without moving for the first few seconds. Then comes the exciting part. I love watching their dresses fly up around them as they do specific jumps and strokes with their faces extremely relaxed. When the music ends the skater is usually in some sort of position with their eyes closed. Then you hear the reporters commenting or kindly pointing out the flaws in their performance. You see the skater skating of the rink with younger children skating around, gathering the gifts the audience threw on the ice.
    Then it is time for the scores to come out. I can always see the look of excitement and nervousness on the skater's faces as they sit next to their coaches. Then the sores just suddenly pop out and either the competitor cheers to themselves of stays silent, doing nothing  and staying as relaxed as possible, trying not to cry.
    Even if they did horrifingly bad, I think they are are brave enough to get out on the ice and show what they can do.

Book Review: Mango-Shaped Space

           A Mango Shaped Space

    This is my 3 book entry this year. This time I'm going to tell you about another great book by Wendy Mass. It's about this girl who has synesthesia. She sees different colors and shapes for each name, number, sounds, etc. She has a cat named Mango who is very special to her. Before third grade she always thought that other people saw things the same way until an embarrassing incident in third grade.
    For the next few years she is all alone in a colorful world until one day she went too far and she lost one of her friends. She feels all alone. and then something WORSE happens and she starts to feel normal, but not the normal she was used to. But I guess you're just going to read it to find out what all her troubles are.

Art: Weaving

The Age of Weaving by Daboh

During art, fifth grade had a lesson of weaving. People became completely obsessed. Then of course we started Free Choice. That's where everyone gets to do whatever project they want. Not surprisingly, everyone went for the weaving station. At first everyone at the weaving station worked with cardboard looms. Then the hats became super popular. There were so many people that wanted to make hats that our art teacher had to actually send an email to parents telling them where to get hat looms for a cheap price. Not one person has finished a hat yet, but there are definitely people that are really close.
    Many people were hoping to finish by winter break and give them as gifts for the holiday, but our art teacher got too busy teaching people how to make hats that she said nobody could finish their hat by winter break. Many people in fifth grade were really inspired by hat-making.

Explorer Projects

    On our first unit of Social Studies, we did Explorer Projects. First, we had to pick an explorer. Then we had to do research using many different resources such as a book, encyclopedia, and websites. For every resource we had to jot down notes about our explorers that we found.

    Next we had to pick a type of project to do. Most people chose a poster but I chose a keynote presentation. You could also have chosen to do a Prezi, a glogster, and everybody book, e.t.c. The due date for our projects was November 11 so we had about 2-3 weeks to complete our projects. On Monday, (the due date) everyone was showing off their projects. At the end of the day the excitement was even more intense because our teacher had announced that we would get a chance to share our projects to everyone. We would have to take a couple post-its and write a comment to the ones that really popped out to you. Then that Wednesday, the parents came and you were able to share your projects with them. It was really cool to see how people did the same explorer as you, but they added completely different information. Some people got inspired to do different projects next time after looking at everyone's projects. I was inspired by the prezis. They could zoom in and add info inside a bubble with different information.

Halloween Party

    On Thursday, October 31 we had our annual Halloween Party\Parade. Since it was raining we had to do the parade in the gym. Because we had to do the parade in the gym where we usually have the party, we had to have the party in the classrooms. Once everyone was in their costumes, we had the parade then went upstairs to have our party. One of the rotations was The Over Under game. They split us up into two teams, and we had to compete against each other on who went over and under the quickest, and then got the pumpkin to the parent back first.
    Another rotation was The Bat Straw Game. How you played was that everybody got a new straw and got spit up into 2 teams. When the parent said go, the first person had to fast walk to a desk where little paper bats had been placed. Without putting your hands on the bat, you had to take 1 bat and put it in a bucket only using your straw. Whoever put all their bats in their bucket first won.
    The next rotation was Charades, except backwards. The would be a Person sitting in a chair and chose a paper out of a bag. The parent running that station would show us the paper and we had to act it out. The person sitting in the chair would guess and once they got it they would get a piece of candy. Then the parent would chose the next person to go  and then it would happen until it was time to switch.
    The last rotation was a couple of activities. The first was a word scramble that you did with a partner. It was a race so it was really intense. The second activity wasn't really an activity but it was probably a lot of peoples favorite. It was the food station. We got to decorate cookies with icing and one of the parents walked around with sprinkles. Overall The Halloween Party was really fun!

Alien Math

    Every Tuesday and Wednesday Miss. McMillion's math class has Mrs. Slodounik come and teach us how to multiply, divide, add, and subtract in different number systems. Also known and bases. The base we got most connected to was base 2 also known as Binary. Every time she comes we get at least 2 knew sheets or packs of a story based on the math. What happens in the story is Earth is about to become a road for other Aliens, so to prove that Earth is just as Intelligent as the other planets. A human goes to prove how smart we are and has to learn how to do all this stuff in different number systems. How you would count in Binary would be 0,1,10, because two equals 10 in Binary. Then it would go 11,100,101, its skips to 100 because in base two there is no two, so you can only use 0's and 1's. We had to make charts and multiplication grids to help us under stand. One base we had to do was base 16, and that base had letters in it. Once we finished the whole thing the human goes back to Earth, which is saved. Although Alien math was hard it was still fun and that's the good part.

Trust Training

Our grade went to Tillis Park to become CLAYMO leaders. Our favorite activity at the retreat was something we call Trust Training.  It starts where you would choose a partner and one would be covered with a blindfold.  Then the other partner would guide the one blindfolded through a bunch of cones set up on a sidewalk. This may sound easy but you couldn't touch your partner while guiding he/she through the cones.  You could only use words. Also, you could not let your partner touch any of the cones nor go off the sidewalk. That was where the trust part comes in. "When I was the blindfolded partner got so nervous, then the next moment my partner said I had gotten to the end. That was why I liked it. I knew my partner had my back."
