Hidden Valley Ski Trip

The Hidden Valley Ski Trip
By Elaine

On January 15, the students of Clayton School district were going on a ski trip, including me! After a 50 minute (and very hot) bus ride, we finally arrived. Everyone who was renting had to go in a massive line to get equipment. When I was in the line, I seriously were envying the people who brought their own equipment. I had to wait for about a hour and I was in the middle of the line. I wasn’t able to imagine how long I would have waited if I were at the back.

When the skis were too big for me, I had to go all the way back and get in line, this time lugging some heavy skis with me! I was extremely annoyed. When I finally got some skis that fit me, I had to go to ski school. At least I was able to ski a little bit as I passed all the stations. Then came the real fun, the slopes!

Since my parents signed that I was a beginner at first, we had to pay a extra $10 to change the paperwork because that was a mistake. I was able to go on the lifts because of that. The infuriating thing was, people who were begginer were sneaking on the lift. You aren’t allowed to do that! Because of that, many people fell of and the lift stopped so much that when I finally reached the top, it had taken 10 minutes and it really should have taken 4! Some people just aren’t fair. What would you have done if you weren’t allowed on the lift?

One Little Word-Imagine

 IMAGINE

What would be the world without imagination? It could be more devastating that you would think. There would be no stories, no books, but that's not all. What about designs? Designs of houses, vehicles, furniture and more. If there is no design, in your head or on paper, then where would you be? You can't think of anything new, so you have to build as you go. But you can't imagine any possible problems which means you can't do things to be prepared. Video games need imagination to be created, math problems need imagination. If you really think about this, there are a ton of things that need imagination. And that is why I chose this word my one little word.

Claymo

Claymo
by: Elaine

This is the third time we, as Claymo leaders had Claymo! Our lesson was about courage, using the book The Tale of Despereaux as an example. While it was fun helping the others in our Claymo group work on a project relating to the lesson, it was very hard. We didn’t have all of the materials, including one critical one that could have spared us plenty of confusion. Also, the lesson wasn’t very clear on some things. There was one page that made no sense until the Claymo Prep and there was this picture that we just could not find. To me it was very stressful. If you were in this situation, would you have been stressed out too?

A Stinging Trip

                      A STINGING TRIP

7 students got stung by bees on a field trip. One student got stung in the face and another got stung 6 times. But what had happened? The 5th grade students of Glenridge Elementary School had been on their way back to their school after seeing a play performed by Wydown Middle School called Christmas Story. It was planned that the students would have gone to a park on the way back to school. There were many leaves. No one gave this much thought. What harm can leaves do? Students even buried each other in leaves. What was dangerous about the leaves was what they hid. There was a beehive...and the bees were active. No one was prepared. Bees were not known to be active during the winter. There weren't supposed to be bees buzzing around! But nevertheless the bees were awake. The students were running around. That led to a chase. One that was quite one-sided. After all, the ones being chased were not aware of this chase. Fortunately the teachers brought first aid packs. If it was not brought the situation would have been worse. So remember, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Fire! (100WC)

I stared at my room. My books. All my belongings. Burning. A fire was destroying my house. And there was nothing I could do about it. I felt like crying. Because all of this was my fault. I light a match and then dropped it. The fire spread throughout the house. How could something so tiny be so destructive? My parents say it isn't my fault. I know they're lying just to make my feel better. Every single second of watching my house burn is excruciating. I hear the deafening siren of the fire truck. Then, I cry.

Elaine's 100 word challenge 2

“Come on!” Nicole called. There was no answer. “Jenna? It isn’t time for jokes. We need to make camp soon.” Still no answer. “Jenna?” Nicole started to backtrack her steps. “Not hide and seek again.” she muttered. There was a rustle in a bush. “Jenna? Was that you?” Yet again, silence. Nicole pushed through the bush. The bush shook wildly behind her. So much for stealth. She stepped into a clearing and there was a crunch. Nicole immediately looked down. She screamed. There was skeleton, about the same size of her and she had just stepped on the femur.

100 Word Challenge: Elaine

Number 1
...she just wouldn’t stop crying...

I ran fast, my heart pounding, my shoes slapping the pavement. My pursuers were everywhere. Or, if I was lucky they would all be running behind me, tripping over each other. But I knew my friends that were playing the game “Infected” weren’t stupid. I kept running, my breath coming in short gasps. Suddenly something was wrong. Where was the sound of everyone else? I turned and nobody was following me. Everyone was crowded around a little girl. She just wouldn’t stop crying. I nudged through the crowded and asked “What was wrong?” Then I blinked. And everyone was gone.

Dot Day project

Fifth Grade’s Dot Day Project
by Elaine

It is only a few days till Dot Day! Dot Day is celebrated at Glenridge and it is in honor of the book, “The Dot”. In art class, all grades make a dot project. Even if Mrs. Haydon has retired, the tradition is still going on. Fifth grade is doing a mobile/stable project.

A mobile is something that is suspended with string, wire etc. A stabile is

something that is on the ground. Fifth grade has to make something using only card stock, wire, yarn, pipe cleaners, various types of beads, circle shapes, hole punchers, and scissors. This may seem like a vast variety of materials, and maybe it is. But is missing something very important: tape or glue! Without at least one of the materials it is impossible to put things together! Or is it? We (Mrs. Barnes’s class) have improvised and made our own works of art. How we did it? Well we (or at least I!) don’t want to spoil the secret....

Claymo Retreat: Minefield

Minefield
By: Elaine, Lily and Wilson

On the Fifth Grade Claymo Retreat we had a activity called Minefield. In this activity we had to trust our partners to lead us through a "minefield". We were blindfolded and our partners had to lead us through, using only words. This was fun because we were at Tillis Park (and it made it even more fun!). Now we know that we are ready to be a fifth grade leader.
