In class we are doing a project called the curiosity project. What we have to do is pick a topic that we are curious about. It could be anything. From cake decorating to animal abuse. We research the topic and then we have to be creative on how to present it. You could do a poster, a speech, a movie, a slideshow, (etc.) You present them to the class.

The deadline for our projects is may 13. We present them to our parents may 19. WE will set up our station and walk around and look at others station. The curiosity projects is a lot of fun and I think you should try to do something that interests you.

In class we have been working on our curiosity projects. Over spring break we were given the assignment to think about what we were curious about. Then when we got back to the school we had to chose a topic to research. I chose the topic of how to tell if someone is lying. At first I thought the topic would be to small and not a lot to research. When I really got into it I learned a lot and found the topic very very interesting. Everyone else in the class has chosen a topic and is researching it to present to the class one day. SOme other projects will be on radiation, animal abuse, sharks, cake decoration and sea turtles and many more.

Now let me tell a little about how we will be graded. We will be graded on spelling and grammar, our information, how our idea began ( our curiosity story ), a reflection which we have to complete and our organization. I am looking forward to the day where we present our projects to the class. To learn about others curiosities and to teach everyone in my class about how to tell if  someone is lying. Some people are presenting their projects in a form of a movie, a keynote, prezi and many more ways. I also have tested my knowledge on how to tell if someone is lying on my sister. This journey has been very fun.

    I have finally decided to do Google Presentation for my curiosity project. It didn’t take a lot of thinking, I just decided an iMovie would be too hard so I picked something interesting and fun. I think a Google Presentation would be easy, yet very planned out so I could my research down in an organized way.

    I started working on it on Thursday the 24th. It was very fun because I got to work on it a little bit and I have a lot of time before we have to present it to friends and the class. I had a great amount of work time on our last genius hour and I’m confident I’ll do well. What format are you doing for your curiosity project?

Genius Hour: The Anticipated Musical

    There’s this Broadway hit that I want to see, and I just really want to watch it. Revival or not, I need to see this musical. The musical is called Wicked. It has hit songs, including “Defying Gravity”, and “Popular, along with “For Good”. Some of the songs have even been used in Glee! Also, “Popular has been covered by Ariana Grande. But, she and the other singer put their own lyric twist on it, and made it more pop.

    I’m not sure what it’s about, but I know that the musical has been played many times, and is the 4th or 3rd longest running musical of all time! That’s some pretty solid numbers, if you ask me.

    I really want to see it. My brother, and my mom have seen the musical, and I have to admit that I’m jealous. But I still can hope that I’ll see it someday, but most likely I won’t. But I still have hope!

Popular Broadway Books

Popular Broadway Books by Manny

    I love books, even better, I love books about musical theatre and Broadway! So, I’m going to talk about a few popular books about that topic. I don’t like all of these books, but they helped me in a few ways.

    The first book is The Great American Mousical. I’m such a fan of this amazing book! It was very interesting and informed me in how a Broadway play is directed and developed. The second book would have to be Showtime. I personally hated this book, it was 800 something pages! But that’s not the reason. The reason was that it gave info ALL about the history. In 800 pages, and I’m planning on talking about the history for 2 minutes! The better and final book is Better Nate Than Ever by Tim Federle. This is such a fantastic book! It’s hilarious, touching, and witty! This 13 year old named Nate snuck out of Jankburg, Pennsylvania to go audition for E.T:The Musical. Not only is this a great IDR book, it also gives me info about Broadway. If I have not read this book by the time summer came along, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.

    These are a few books about Broadway. And each and every one of these books has critical acclaim on the back, or the front cover. It’s good if you get a good review that you can put on the book. That attracts more readers, and I think that you can be one of those people reading these books.

Genius Hour: Broadway Research

Broadway Research by Manny I’m doing Broadway for my curiosity project, and I’m going to talk about how my research is going. I’ve been struggling for a bit, but I found this site that’s gonna give me a lot of information, so I’m happy! Well, I am really trying to find a video about Broadway’s history, but I couldn’t, except one, but it was only 1 minute and 40 seconds. So, that didn’t help. And from there, it was struggle after struggle. But then I found the site I told you about in the first paragraph, and that’ll help me a lot. So, my research is good news right now! I’m almost done with my history of Broadway part of the presentation. And I’m ready to move on with that, and I’m feeling good! How are you doing with your research?

Popular Broadway Songs

    Broadway musicals, of course, have songs because they are musicals. They hold many stories many adventures, just in a song! And right now, I’m going to tell you a few popular Broadway songs!

    Well, the first one I have to mention is “On My Own” from Les Miserables. It’s a soing about love, and other stuff like that. It’s a vocally big song song, so it would take someone like Idina Menzel or Lea Michele to pull it off. The next one is “Popular” from the Tony Award winning musical, Wicked. It’s about beauty and not being popular, but being happy with yourself. It’s a funny song, trust me! When I watched the video, at funny parts in the song, the crowd laughed! And the final song is “People” from Funny Girl, the musical I want to see. I’m not sure what the song is about, but I do know that it was very popular and a lot of critics knew of.

    Those are only some of the popular Broadway songs, of course. But, I love doing these popular Broadway blogs, just to inform you about some of the popular stuff in Broadway. I hope you got a lot of info from this!

Guest Speaker

    On Friday, the 4th of April, we had a guest speaker come in and talk. It was for Samuel’s curiosity project. And just to make it clear, Samuel is not in our class, as we all know. But he was able to contact an F.B.I dude named Doug and he showed him around the F.B.I place. And so now, he’s here talking to all us fifth graders about the F.B.I and other junk.

    Well, Doug talked to us about all this stuff about the F.B.I, answered a lot of questions, and told us about the application things, which unfortunately took him an 1 and 30 minutes to discuss. Honestly, I was about to fall asleep as 40 minutes went by. It was just so boring! But it was fun for other people. So the very least I can do is feel happy for them. Anyways, I learned a lot of new things, which is good!

    Even though it was boring in my opinion, I was very intrigued by all the cool facts and questions people asked. So overall, it was okay. But I’m not giving the whole speech any higher than that! But, I love having guest speakers, so I’ll congratulate Doug on his accomplishments in his life.

Genius Hour Learning: Popular Broadway Plays

    Broadway is one of the most successful theatre districts in the world. It has become popular nationwide. People from all over the country and even the world come to see the amazing productions. There have been some controversial ones, bad reviewed plays and such. But then, there are the great ones. The ones that mark history in Broadway and the audience and fans will never forget. That’s what I’m here to talk to you about.

Well, one of the most popular and successful Broadway plays was The Lion King. I watched the original movie and LOVED IT! It was so entertaining and action packed. I’m glad they made a Broadway play about it. The next popular play on Broadway was Wicked. The amazing Idina Menzel was on the Broadway cast, and I heard the play was really good. I was going to watch it, but I couldn’t because of some ticket malfunction. The last popular Broadway play I’m mentioning is the Phantom of the Opera. They made a book, and they made another book, which is the Goosebumps version. The play must’ve been really good, because on the most popular plays on Broadway rankings on Broadway.com, it was like at 12. While The Lion King was 2 and Wicked was 4.

I really want to see a Broadway play, and I have yet to see one. I really hope they make another revival of these plays, because seeing them would be an honor. I wrote about these plays because even though they’re extremely popular, they have messages there too.

    Curiosity projects are projects we have to complete these last 8 weeks of school. We have to think of something we are curious about. I looked at the successful curiosity projects from the past, and a lot of them have to do with science. I’m glad mine are not like that, because that means that my ideas are different from the past ones. My curiosity has to do with music, but I can’t tell anyone yet. I think these projects will be very fun, and I’m ready for the hard work!

    Mrs.Barnes started the introduction to this project by talking about the people working for Google. They work 80% on their job, and 20% on something they want to do. You could make an app if you wanted to, and you get to do that for 20% of your time there! So, that’s what we’re gonna do. I’m so excited to study my project. Have you picked your project yet?

Ever heard of Google?

    You know, the big search place on computers? Well, the employees get treated really well, they are even allowed to take naps. They have a system called 80/20, this is where 80% of the time they have to do ther job, then for 20% of the time you can do your own thing, like make an app. This is called, genius hour.

    So we got introduced to a school version of genius hour called the curiosity project.This is where ever week will get time to work on something where curious about.  For example, you could learn about animals, I'm going to learn about machines. I can't wait to try it out and see if you try it too.
