STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL

The Strawberry Festival this year was really exciting.  I really liked the rides, and the sponge throwing was funny and entertaining.  The pie eating contest was fun, and many peoples’ faces were covered in whipped cream.  It was sunny and warm, the perfect ice cream eating weather.  It was cool inside, and hot outside.  It was one of the best money raising activities in Glenridge.

The situation was horrible.  A giant insect had been destroying much of the Midwest, and it finally hit Missouri.  The military was called in, and they tried and tried to shell the beast out of the sky, but the enlarged honeybee was too quick.  Saint Louis lay in ruins, the Arch completely destroyed.

7 DAYS EARLIER  1500 HOURS  

SOMEWHERE IN NEVADA

“The serum is almost ready!”  called out a scientist.  “It will have to be tested as soon as it is ready,”  William said.  He was feeling particularly tired today, and he had a good reason.  He had been working all day and all night for the past few days, perfecting a serum to enlarge a being’s body, but still keeping the muscles’ mass in the same proportion to the other body mass (fat, bones, skin, etc.)  Soon the serum was ready to test, and he inserted it into the correct slot in the testing room.  Since his whole team was so tired, they forgot to check for living things they did not want to alter, and one team member entered some extra zeroes in the size enlargement on one sector.  A honeybee flew in, and by way of coincidence, got enlarged way too much.  It obliterated the whole compound almost instantly, its sheer size breaking the walls.  The team was killed, and the beast proceeded to destroy everything in sight.

I started to search more and more.  I hoped the the battery was somewhere in the cupboard, where I had last put it.  I saw the cupboard door open.  Maybe I left it open, I thought to myself, and I opened the cupboard door.  There was no battery.  I knew that the person would starve if left him/her alone, and I also knew the portal would close soon.  The portals have a timing device and automatically close after some time.  I needed to build another battery now.  I knew that if I clipped together some 9-volt batteries, I could potentially receive enough power to fire off one portal.  I needed about 7000 volts to do this.  I did some calculations, and figured out I needed about 200 batteries to do this.  I had exactly 10 batteries.  I also had a 10-hour time limit.

Part Two

Someone had used the warp device.  I should have closed the garage door, but I forgot when my mom called me to dinner.  Someone had scattered the pieces of the device all around the floor.  The egg-shaped portable battery was gone.  It was the only one I could use to power my device.  Then I saw the portal.  It had been used.  There were footsteps leading up to it.  Since I could not create another portal, the person was trapped.  I searched everywhere, but I could not find the egg shaped battery.  Then a horrible thought came to me.  What if the battery had been taken into the portal?

100 Word Challenge: Tim

MARCH 18, 2147  MANCHESTER, ENGLAND

Today was a normal day returning from school, and I am just finishing elementary school.  I had finished my homework on the hoverbus.  I had some pre algebra homework, and a digital dissection I did on my touch pad.  I also started to do some physics calculations to help my recent project.  When I returned home, I grabbed a quick snack consisting of an apple and some sparkling water, then threw on my welding coat, and headed downstairs. I like to work at home on new inventions, and just tinker around until I create something new.  There I started working on my wormhole device.  I had programmed the software needed to operate an ideal wormhole device, but I could not get a good physical device.  I needed to find a way to increase the launch distance, decrease the recoil, and generally make it work. I thought I had enough time to finish the project before dinner, but my mother called me up for dinner. While I was gone, something horrible had taken place.

This week, we are having conferences.  We will lead our parents around the stations that have been set up by our teacher, and do the activities there.  For example, in the science station, we try to separate a mixture with a screen, a coffee filter, and some evaporation dishes.

100 Word Challenge: Timothy

It is  very interesting to follow a plant through it's life cycle.  For the first few weeks, nothing seems to happen.  Then, all of a sudden, the plant starts pushing through the earth.  Then the real magic starts to happen.  In a month, the plant starts to grow a flower. This flower will eventually turn into the fruit of the plant.  This is the part that holds the seeds.  An example of fruits would be an apple.  Apples hold the seeds from the apple tree.  Animals then eat this fruit, then dispersing the seeds with their droppings.  Even though few seeds make it through the animals digestive tract, and even fewer find a good place to grow, the plant produces more than enough
fruits to reproduce.

100 Word Challenge

When the Soviet Union launched sputnik, the whole world was in shock.  You could tune in to the radio of sputnik, and hear it beeping from space!  You could also see it in the night sky!  The U.S. was also completely staggered.  Meetings were held across the country to find an answer.  The United States already had developed a satellite, but they could not launch it properly.  They called it Explorer 1.  The first successful launch was four months after the Soviet launch of sputnik and sputnik 2.  Sputnik 2 carried a living organism with it, a dog named Laika.  This was also a blow to the US.  This is what started the space race.

    Once, I went fishing with my grandfather.  We pushed off of the beach, and then we went out to the river.  We tried to fish in multiple areas, but only caught one tiny fish.  We fished near some grass, we fished near the edge of the beach, but all we could see was water.  We wanted to go out on to the deeper part of the river, but we were not properly equipped for that.  We had a little lunch in the boat, and we set off to the beach.  We tried to fish again in some areas, but alas, there were no fish.  When we were pulling out from the last area we tried to fish in, my grandfather broke his fishing rod.  We returned home, and we let my cousin release the fish.

    I think it is really silly for a pink gorilla to ride a bicycle.  If I saw one, I would probably start laughing.  I once saw a bear on a motorcycle, and I laughed, but a pink gorilla on a bicycle would be too much.  I do not know how to make a gorilla pink, and I do not know how to make a gorilla go on a bicycle.  I think the best way to have a grand party is to have pink gorillas riding on bicycles. Why?  I think it is best to entertain guests so they can have a grand time.  How about you?         

Peace Ball

Every year in November teachers give out peace loops to children who do something peaceful.  Then the children connect all the peace loops their class earns into an big chain, and then we measure the chains, and we count the peace loops in the chains.  Then an group of children rolls the chains into a big ball, around a core consisting of a tennis ball with an cut in it.  Mrs. Spann collects papers with words of peace on them from the children and puts them in the ball.  At the Holiday Sing, it is displayed.  This year’s ball was 6 pounds!

Art: Hat Weavings

At art class we have choice art, where we choose what we do.  Hat weavings are becoming increasingly popular, and people have started to take them home.  At first Mrs. Hayden allowed this at first, but when looms started to disapear, she stopped allowing them to be taken home.  Sophia, Emma, Daboh and DJ have made considerable progress.

Mystery Skype

MYSTERY Skype  by Tim

  On Tuesday the 26 of November, we hosted a Mystery Skype.  We were talking with a class from somewhere we didn't know, and we had to guess where we were before they guessed where we were. 
    We kind of won because we did guess to the accuracy of address, but we looked at the skype name (memorial school)  and once we guessed their state (Massachusetts)  and their city (Burlington)  we searched the name to find the school.  They eventually guessed our location, and we called it a draw.
    I think that all classes should have access to this.

Square Art

SQUARE ART by Timothy

In September, we made art out of squares.  The first square was 16x16, the next was 15x15, the next 14x14, etc.  We made patterns with these squares, and the odd perimeters were one color, and the even another.
    Our whole fifth grade enjoyed making the artwork.  Some students arranged it in a pattern with the squares decreasing in size on the largest one.  We could arrange it in any way, and everyone had a unique design. I think they are all beautiful.

Buddies

BUDDIES

We have kindergarten buddies to help them make arts and crafts. The kindergarten class we meet with is Mrs. Carter's class.  We usually meet the first Friday of each month, but we were in for a pleasant surprise when we got to meet with them on the 30th of October, the day before Halloween.  We helped them with a word search and two coloring worksheets.  We are looking forward to meeting with them again on the 8th of November.
