STEM DAY FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Going to the STEM day field trip was a lot of fun. We got to meet so many new people from Meramec and Captain, but we also got to got to meet many high school students who helped us out! All of the activities we did were really fun, but the one that stood out most to me were the BioMed activities. One of the BioMed activities we did was seeing what our heart rate was by attaching sensors to three places on our arms. The sensors were attached to a computer that showed us what our heart rate was. We did something similar in the second BioMed activity. What we did was we held sensor like things that were kind of like nunchucks in our hands. The sensors read our heart rate and shows us what it was. Then they had us do exercise for thirty seconds and then they checked our heart rate again to see what might have happened. Like I thought, our heart rate skyrocketed!!! But the activity that for sure went above and beyond was when we got to see the dissected lamb hearts!!!!!!!!! For safety we put on safety gloves that made our hands all powdery and dusty, and then we got to TOUCH the heart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It had a very squishy texture, and it was cut through the middle so we could look on the inside too! The inside looked a little bit like zombie guts, and the whole heart inside and out was a dull, lazy brown.

Over all, STEM day was really fun, but I bet that BioMed will be the fourth graders favorite activity!

The Rebels 100WC

The nine worlds were under attack. Terror was spread across the lands, like butter spread onto bread. The rebels from a distant galaxy hated the nine worlds, and were ever so jealous of their precocious belongings and way of life. They assumed the only thing that they were to do was to plant an attack. In that time and place jealousy was something to be very mad about. The side that was jealous would attack the side they were jealous of. As perfect as this was for the rebels, there was much controversy about it. The rebels had a plan. they would bomb the city.

Roller blading Madness

In PE we are doing roller blading. Only grades 3-5 get to do this as it would be a hassle for younger kids. But in PE it is not going so well, at least for the fifth graders! Every day there is at least one person who does not get the shoe size they need because they are already out of that size. Also, a lot of people like to slam into each other on pourpose just to be funny. But what happens is that then other skaters bump into them on accident, and then people keep falling, and falling, and falling. Untill it is a heaping pile of skaters all on top of each other. Also, some just go way to fast and bump into others. On top of that, I hear very rude and hurtfull comments from other skaters when they pass by biginners who are not as good at skating as them. ( This has happened to me before). But the pros are that most skaters are very supportive of their classmates, and alwas help them up when they fall. I would like to acknowledge my two best friends Iris and Ava because they are very supportive of me when I skate and are my bodygards so people don't bump into me!

Ski Time by Seraphina

 Ski time!

On Thursday we went to hidden valley, which are ski slopes about an hour away from our school! All three Clayton schools went, including us! My favorite part was going on the ski lift and skiing down the bunny slope. It was a lot of fun! The hart part about using the ski lift was getting off, we had to be fast enough to ski off the lift, and not have the seat bump us on the butt. That was my problem. On the very last time I went on the ski lift I managed to get off without falling, but I was unaware that I got off to early, and the seat I was sitting in bumped me really, really hard in the butt. Which sent me flying into the artificial snow! If you have skied before, you would know how hard it is to get up once you have fallen. Yes, really hard, I fell so many times, which resulted in me having to get up so many times as well. That part of it was very unpleasant. Another thing I really enjoyed was going on the rope tow. A rope tow is something you grab onto, and it pulls you up to the top of the hill. It takes you really, really fast up the hill and so many people fell off because of this. Also, lunch was amazing. Eating one slice of pizza and an ice cold drink of Hi-C is the best thing in the world after you ski! Skiing is awesome, (and hard)!

My Little Word

My Little Word by Seraphina

The word I chose was harmony. This word describes my life because I make my family and my group of friends who they are as a whole. You can think of it as a song. The song is the whole, but the different instruments that play the song make it what it is and what it sounds like in the end. The harmony and melody complete the song, so you can’t have just the melody or just the harmony. You have to have both, to make the song what it is.

Awesome Claymo Day

Today we had another great Claymo lesson that was based on the book the tale of Despereaux. We watched a video of the story read by our librarian, and made a mural to put up in the school. The mural we made was to say how even if we have fears or are nervous we need to be courageous. During my time so far as a Claymo leader, I have have learned that I have the ability to teach a group of kids and teach myself at the same time! One thing that is going well in my Claymo group is how everyone listens to one another and doesn’t goof off. They are an awesome group of kids! A challenge that still lingers in my group is a lack of ideas when we have a project to do. I usually am the one who has to come up with ideas. Our lesson today was about being courageous. I made sure my group understood the big idea of this lesson by explaining that being courageous isn’t just about being brave. It is about standing up for what you think is right, or keeping your beliefs even if it is unpopular to do so. I am so excited for our future meetings, but I do have some goals for my team. My goal for my team is to get better at thinking up ideas. I will try to make this happen by not thinking up ideas myself, but letting them do it all on their own -( with a tiny bit of help.) I am so happy I have the team I do, and I can’t wait to see what we do next. “Yay”!!!

How do you think Claymo helps students on teams and fifth grade leaders become better people in this world?

red depression

All Bailey saw was the blood, nothing else, just the blood. The horrible dark red blood. Bailey never understood how dangerous taking someone non-fictional into the fictional world was.

She just learned the hard way. She new that all Deren had ever wanted was to try to be the hero of his favorite book. Her heart pounded, The way his eyes stayed still, and the way the arrow pierced his heart, the way whenever she called his name he didn’t answer, just spelled out Death. She wanted to scream, and say the world wasn't fair, but she knew that wasn't an option.

scratch all day long

“Uuuuuuuuugh”! Maya, groned. She just couldn’t keep her mind off her head. Scratch, scratch, scratch. She couldn’t stop scratching her head. She couldn’t keep herself from wondering how could something so tiny, cause her head to itch so much? “I hate lice”, she grumbled.

“Hopefully the itching will go down once we use this special lice shampoo”. Her mother replied.
“ I don’t think it will work mom”. Maya protested.
“ But I am also going to use this special brush to get the nits out”.
   “FINE”!!! She screamed.
So, for the next 30 minutes Maya had to sit there and have her hair brushed.

100 word challenge

Horrific mudslide

It was a chilly, horrible night, and the trees whipped around like giant jump ropes, lashing out in every direction! Anise was scared, and had nothing to cover her but a little thin coat that barely fit her. She stumbled through the 80 foot trees and had to dodge one every second. The clouds started pouring raindrops as big as hail. The storm grew bigger, and bigger. She looked down oh, no she was downhill, and it was a mud trail! And the last thing she remembered seeing was the mud working it’s way down the hill. SPLASH!!!

Personal Narrative: Beautiful Words

Beautiful words

By: Seraphina Corbo

In the second grade, I had a lot of dreams. Some of them realistic, some of them not. But don’t be confused, these are not the types of dreams you have at night. The sad thing was, even the realistic dreams did not come true!  My dreams NEVER came true…..

Until one sunny,  bright, blue skyed day in November. There was a crisp chill in the air, and the hustle and bustle to get into school was the usual.

“ Ms.Dolan, what specials do we have today”? I asked.
“Music, and PE”, she replied. So that’s that, I thought. We stepped down the long stairway, with a few hushes from Ms. Dolan along the way.

The lights of the music room blinded me, as I had only woken up 30 minutes before that. We sat ourselves down on the very uncomfortable, hard carpeted ground.

“ In 2nd you have opportunity to audition for our fairy- tale musical”! Mrs. Williams told us.
“Yes, I’ve wanted to do a musical ever since the Buggy opera”! I squealed. Then she went on and on about what the parts where. When she said it I knew right away which part I wanted. Rapunzel! She was my favorite princess of all time! I also look like her. I would be perfect for this part I, thought! When she called for people to audition, I went first. Because I was so eager to get it over with. And to wow.

I was a little vain back then… I used as much expression as I could, because I wanted it sooooo bad. Mrs. Williams smiled really big at me. “Great job”! I smiled back, and sat down. the thing was, my friend and I were head to head for the same part. That made us both really nervous! “Can I also try- out for the Hansel part”? I asked.
“ yes Mrs.Williams said. I did that addition too, but it definitely didn’t turn out as well as my Rapunzel audition. A few long days after that, filled with worry and anxious. Mrs.Williams was coming around, handing a FEW people cards! What are those for? I wondered. Then I asked those around me but they didn’t answer. She came over to me and handed me a card of my very own! I looked, I gasped
“Oh. My. Gosh”! I exclaimed. Before I had no idea what the cards were for, but I figured out soon enough… On that card was my dream, my destiny!!! But also my horer.

         THE RAPUNZEL PART!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was extremely shocked what would Iris say?! I was so scared my hands were trembling! But I was also extremely excited and happy!

“How, how, how”! I screeched at recess, everybody stared. What’s your problem? I thought. but finally after school I got the guts to tell her. We were going to her house after school that day. For some reason it was a long walk to her house.

“Why so quiet”? I asked her. She grunted, but said nothing. We reached her house and climbed the steep steps. At last we finally reached her room in the apartment  house. “OOOOOOO, AAAAAAA”.......  I took slow deep breaths. “Um…….”
“What”?! She said a little bit sassy.
“Well it just so happens that I have the part of Rapunzel”..... Her face turned red, uuuu nooooooo she’s gonna blow, I told myself!

“AAAAA GGGGG HHHHH”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She screamed her loudest scream in history. I watched her trample into her room, and belly flop onto her bed. Great, I thought. The perfect definition of this is my nightmare!!!

“Iris, come on, please don’t be mad!”
“UUUU GGGG HHHH!!!!” She groaned very loudly.
“I guess I should leave then”... I whispered. “ Okay” she replied…..I ramed my shoes onto my feet, and started out the door. I stepped through the cold stairway, down the icy steps. My voice echoed very loudly as I told her goodbye. I raced home, kicked off my shoes, and flipped onto my bed. I felt bad because I thought I did the wrong thing.

I drew a bath for myself, just to think myself over.”Whhhhyyyy”! I screeched and pounded on my bath toys. I stepped out, banana sluged into my PJ’s and hit the sack. “I should do my daily ending ceremony”.I told myself, that’s something I did every night back then before bed, when I thought over my day. Tonight’s was:

“Today was not a good day, but one thing is for sure, Iris is not going to talk to me again! (This would be terrible because we were friends since we where 2!!!)     Then I rested my head back, and closed my eyes to dream.

This time to dream about that tomorrow would be better. To dream about her saying nicer words, kinder words. Beautiful words.

100 Word Challenge: Seraphina

and she just wouldn’t stop crying……

The bullying was insane, grabbing, pushing, punching. But also the other kinds too. Like making up ridiculous lies about her, also telling other people not to be her friends. Alice was depressed, there she was sitting at her desk thinking about how horrible those girls where.
Why , why, why, did they half to be so cruel to her? She didn’t want to tell the teachers because she thought she would be a tattle tale doing that.

At their school there were many lessons about not bullying, but the thing is they did it anyway!!!

Stuff

Stuff is a time usually at the end of the day that we do sometimes. When we have this time we use it to get things done that need to be done. But we also use it to do other things too. Like learning new educational games, or looking at our blog buddies blog posts. Or going onto educational websites, like khan academy.

But one thing I really like about stuff is that when I go home and my mom or dad asks me what I did at school, I can simply say

                                              "Stuff".

Kindergarten Buddies

 Kindergarden buddies
By: Seraphina

In fifth grade we have the opportunity to be buddies with adorable kindergardeners! They are fun to be with but can also be troubling because they are so young. In particular, my buddy Avery is like the fruit loop in a bowl of cheerios. This is because unlike most kindergardeners, she has the ability to read very, very well for a kindergardener! This is because her mother is a reading teacher for her class.
At first I had no idea that this was so, but I figured out soon enough! Her favorite books are Mo Willams'books. When I offered to read her an elephant and piggy book, she said yes! But what was weird was that we both reached for it at the same time! So, I let her pick it up, but instead of me reading it to her, she started reading to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In conclusion, my buddy Avery is different from any other kindergardeners I have ever met!

How are your kindergarden buddies different or special from others?

Claymo: Web Activity

          The Web Activity
   by Seraphina  and Ava

Our class (5B) went to Tillis Park on August 27 from 9:00 to 3:00, 2015. We did a Claymo retreat in order to celebrate a new year of Claymo Fith Graders. One activity in the retreat was the ending. The ending was an activity called the web. The web is an activity where you get a ball of yarn, and you loop it around you finger, so it wont fall of when you throw it to the next person. When you ave the ball of yarn, the person who trows the ball of yarn gets to say a nice thing that the have noticed that is a good property of being of a Claymo leader. After they are done saying something nice about you, you get to pick someone to say something nice to. This goes on and on and on until everyone got something nice said to. in the end, there is a big web of yarn, that's why it's called the web! You get a yarn bracelet to wear for the entire year and if you do, you get a prize!
