5th Grade Planetarium Field Trip

5th Grade Planetarium Field Trip

Today (leap year 2016) we went to the planetarium and saw stars and exhibits. We were required to either make a blog post or a trivia with 5 questions. I chose to make a blog post. During the show we learned about Orion,Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor. We also learned about the difference between a star and a planet in the sky, stars twinkle and planets are just kind of dull. Also we learned that when you look at mars in the sky at about 6:00 am it always appears red; And we learned about how to find polaris or the north star using Ursa major(big dipper). Before the show we were doing sailboat racing and torturing the teachers on the bridge by standing and jumping on top of the glass windows. Riley C. managed to get satellite rover things to stick its arm out.

AWESOME science center field trip

Oh hi there, my name's Riley. Today we went to the planetarium and I had an  AMASSING  time. If you know me in real life I'm like a JR. astronomer I love, love, looooove, The stars (I'm going to the Kennedy space center in Florida during the summer and I'm going to eat lunch with a REAL astronaut. I'm super exited!) Canis Mojor (The great dog) is my favorite constellation. At the Stl Science center I Got to Control a real NASA rover (sadly not on mars) see a star show, And go to there makers space where i got to make a sail for a small boat (witch I beat every one with using simple physics of course.) and ended up finding that the structure that I built MONTHS ago was still there! me and my reading partner Claudia built a wagon that we pulled everyone around in (not at the same time). Honestly I know that I'm doing this for homework but I love the subject, its the best one in the universe! ha ha, get it? no? well this letter is about astronomy and you know what, forget it.

Thank you for spending some of your precious time to read this.

Science: Astronomy Projects

Science Projects
By Iris and Ava

Our Science project is a project that you can make your own, There are different  types of projects that you can choose from a sheet of paper. We both chose ‘Alien’  but there were : Alien , Stars  Tour Guide, Brochure, Free choice, Eclipses, Astronomy history, Constellations & The Big Question!

For Ava’s Alien project I did a cute alien with puppy dog eyes. It looks like a blob of color in pink and blue. They can float with a body of a cloud. They live on Neptune too! I also made a brochure telling the reader what my alien looks like and what it is. My favorite part of my alien was probably the drawing in the brochure. They have cute little cloud houses that float because Neptune is made of gasses and ice. They are also best friends with iris’s alien the saturnians. And I think that it is pretty cool :) This is what Ava’s Alien looks like:

Iris’s aliens are called the Saturnians. They live on Saturn and they have a tail to swim through the gasy surface of Saturn. They can also fly with their beautimus wings though tough storms of Saturn. They are besties with the Bopz a.k.a. Ava’s  alien. They girls have 1 tail and 1 pair of wings. And the boys have 2 tails and also 1 pair of wings. They soar around the galaxy shipping packages and mailing letters to friends and visiting them. Here is what they look like:

Free choice:
Here is a free choice. In free choice, you can basically do whatever you would like to do! But it has to be based off of astronomy.

Tour Guide:
Here is a tour guide. In a tour guide, you can choose a couple planets and research and then  tie it all together in a brochure.

Brochure:
Here is a brochure. In a brochure, you can research a planet and put interesting facts about that planet into a brochure.

Claymo: Engineering Challenge

Muncha Muncha Munch
by Charlie and Sonali

The book we read about was about how Mr. McGreely who wanted to build a garden with carrots lettuce  peas and tomatoes. The first night the bunnies went and ate all the veggies. Muncha Muncha Muncha. Mr. McGreely built a wire fence around the garden. The second night the bunnies hop right over the fence. Muncha Muncha Muncha! The next morning he was very upset so he built a wire fence around the mini fence in the middle. They dug in and ate all the veggies. Muncha Muncha Muncha. Mr McGreely was really mad so he built a moat. but the Bunnies can swam and munch munch munch. Mr McGreely was furious. he built a brick wall and at the night the bunnies could not get in. Mr McGreely the next morning brought the bucket in to get the veggies. but to his surprise the bunnies were in the basket and munch munch munch.

We read this story and then got to choose to solve problems of the bunnies or Mr. McGreeley.  Students brainstormed ideas on how to help the bunnies would get in or the students designed solutions for Mr. McGreeley.  It was fun to design and we all enjoyed the story.

Science: Mixtures and Solutions

Science unit Mixtures and Solutions
Post by Miguel

Today (May 20th, 2015) was officially our last learning day in the science lab.  And tomorrow, is officially our last day taking an elementary school science test (dramatic music, please).  Pretty sentimental, huh?
Well, as you can see, this science unit is on mixtures and solutions, pretty much chemicals.  We learned about an item’s solubility, and chemical reactions.  I’d rate this unit 4 out of 5 stars.  It was fun, but could have been better.
Did you like Mixtures and Solutions?

Science: Ramps and Spheres

  Ramps and Spheres
                            By Jean

In science we are testing force and motion.  We just finished testing pendulums so now we are testing spheres and ramps.  The materials you have are three different size spears. One dig spear, one little spear and, one big spear.  We also had a ramp and a runway. We tapped the ramp and the runway together at the bottom.  We also made sure that the runway was not over any bumps or cracks so it would not mess up our experiment.  We had a graph that had spaces for the three trials and the average.  We had two of those graphs, one for the medium ball at the two mark the four mark and at the size mark.  The second graph was for the big ball the medium ball and the small ball and they all started at the three mark.
The marks are on the ramp so we know where to let the ball go but when we do that we can not put pressure on the spear.  We have a measuring tape next to the runway so we can track how long the ball goes in two seconds.  But sometimes it can be really hard to do all this stuff because there might be some dents in the runway or your ball might stop allof a sudden (which happened to me) or you could just have a human airor.
So now that you have an idea do you, think you would want to do this experiment?

Science: Pendulums!

Science in 5B
By Sunaina
In Science we are in a unit called Force and Motion first when we started we studied pendulums. Have you ever built a pendulum? Well I have. In my investigation I learned the about the movements of a pendulum by creating a 15 second timer pendulum.

In my experiment we first created a pendulum which was 123 cm long and it swung 7 times in 15 seconds. In my second attempt I tried with a shorter string with 32 cm in which it swung 15 times in 15 seconds. In my observations I learned that the longer the string attached to the weight the slower it swings. The shorter the string the faster it swings. I also learned that you must try an experiment multiple times to get an accurate result.

Science: Pendulums

Pendulums by Biruk

I am going to teach you some facts I learned from my investigation of double-decker pendulums.

One fact is about the pendulum. When you have a high release point, you get low swings and just because the pendulum is longer the swings will be even lower.  The number of swings when you have a high release point is 7  swings.

Another fact is, when you have an average  release point, you get an average swings but a little less.  The numbers for an average release point is 10 swings.

Another fact is, when you have a low release point, you get a little less swings than the average low release point. The number of swings for a low release point is 12 swings.

If I took the low penny off there would be 0 swings because the pendulum would just drop. If I took the top penny off there would be 6 swings because there is less mass.

Would you like to try this at home someday?  If so, share what you learn.

Science: Force and Motion and Models

Science: Force and Motion
By Miguel

Yesterday, we started our science unit of Force and Motion.  On the second day already, we have learned a lot!  Like, new science lab rules, seating arrangement, the “Black Box”, and engineers (I never said stuff related to our science unit!).
I don’t like this new science unit.  I LOVE IT!!!  Do you love it, or like it?  On a scale from 1 to 10, what would you rate it, 10 being I LOVE IT!!! and 1 being it sucks?  I would give it a ten.

Science Groups

            Science Groups by Manny

During the afternoon, we have science groups that we do usually when reading time takes place. I like my science group. The people in my group are Eva, Aidan, Mya, BingBing, and me! Together, we are Group C.
We are currently doing stuff on the Sun, Moon, and Stars unit. That was by far my favorite unit in science. I was proud of myself on Wednesday because I always explained my thoughts, and objected to answers I knew were wrong. I was on fire that day! I wonder what the other groups are doing. Maybe they're doing the same thing as my group. Maybe they aren't.
Overall, I just love science groups, and I like the people in my group. It's a very fun time to explain your thinking and be smart, and stretch your brain. That's what science groups is all about. Do you like science groups like I do?

I Checks!

              I Checks by Manny

I Checks are a science packet we do for each unit in the subject. There are four investigations in the packet. Investigations are things we do throughout the unit of solutions and mixtures. Now, we are doing experiments with concentration. Those are very fun.

Most of the questions are multiple choice. The questions are about all we've done this far. On Tuesday, we did investigation one. I worked with Grace, and together we did a solid job. At the last two problems, we had to really think because it was an open response question section. But we conquered it, and had a fun job doing that. I Checks rock! I can really have fun with science problems and questions. Science is now a fun unit. We get to use liquids, and all that stuff. And then we get to show off our knowledge in the I Check.

Do you find the I Check difficult?

Science Lesson #1 of Chemistry

 Science Lesson by Manny

In science, we all shook Mr.Kearney’s hand first thing as we got in the door. He then told us to get into a line. Being in science is awesome. The feeling of being in the lab is great. Anyways, he read the list of who was going to sit where. I was at table 5 along with Diniti, Abby, and DJ. I knew right away we would be a good team. Diniti is cooperative and very smart, Abby’s the same, and DJ helps out a lot with remembering what other people are supposed to do, even though there’s no job for that. Moving on, we went over a couple of rules, got our notebooks passed out, all that stuff. And then, we started our lesson! We all went to the carpet jamming to the tunes Mr.Kearney brought. We then learned all this great stuff about mixture and H2O. Other things like that too. When we went to our desks, importers, that was the job that I had, had to go and get cups with labels on them. Then we went to the table next to cabinet with all the goggles to fill a tiny tiny spoon of gravel to put in one of the cups. When importers got back, everyone started to observe the gravel. In our notebooks, we recorded the texture, size, shape, other, and something else. Maybe they only had 4, or maybe they had 5, I’m not sure. I forgot. 5B had a great time and we can’t wait to go again. It’s so fun for me to have science. Do you like having science class?

Science is Starting Soon

Starting Science by Manny

We’re going to be starting science soon. I have some mixed reactions. I do like science, but that means we have to speed up social studies. I don’t want to do that. Like, AT ALL! Starting science will be fun though, if I don’t think about it getting in the way of social studies.
I have some thoughts about it. I wonder what unit it will be. Science is so fun, but so difficult. I usually do better than I expect to do though, which is great. I like doing science. The units are usually fun to do. I liked doing structures of life in 4th grade. I really liked that. Did you like structures of life? It was a fun unit. I also like the water unit. I did well in that unit. It was really fun. I do have some questions to ask. Will the unit be harder than the one before? Will I do better than I think I would? That last one is up to me. You know, maybe starting science won’t be so bad after all.
