Aerodynamic Engineering Station

On STEM day, the 5th grade students in Clayton went to Clayton High School to learn about: Science, technology, engineering, and math. There were six stations to help us learn more about each. One of our favorite stations was the aerodynamic engineering station. At this station, we made paper airplanes with different designs, and tried to make them go through a hula hoop. It was difficult, and we tried many times. Very few people succeed. If you happened to be one the lucky winners, you received a piece of candy. YUM! To launch the planes, we used cool machines that propelled our planes into the air. Some people were PRO level airplane makers, while others, had copied off of PRO level builders. Many people tried, but only few people succeeded. After the hula-hoop contest, there was another contest, only about how FAR your plane went. Again, many people failed, but only ONE person succeeded. The prize for that contest, was the MOST candy… Each and every one of the people who did not get any candy, were drooling with jealousy.

5th Grade Field Trip by Ava

Our trip to the Planetarium was fun! We got to observe MARS and what was on it, and we got to go to the STAR SHOW and the MAKERSPACE.  My personal favorite was the STAR SHOW, because it was SO in-depth, and I thought that it was very cool. The Planetarium is basically connected to the Science Center. When we got off of the bus, I was paired with my friend Ollie. So we got to stick together the whole time! We headed up to the MAKERSPACE first, and it was so cool! There was a build-your-own-ship station, there was a test gravity station where you place the sphere a little tube, you pull a lever, it floats, and then you can try to make ithrough a little hoop. Next to that, there was a MARS exhibit. It included a wheel, with sand. It was basically like a stamp,with a ‘redo’ button.

Next was the second part to the MARS exhibit. There was a REAL ROVER! You could control it, and it was super cool! Then, everybody in the grade went to the star show. I was 15 minutes late (Ask me why…) and then I went to the star show. When I walked into the pitch black room, I could literally not see ANYTHING! So instead of the mats that were sprawled out across the floor,  I Just sat down on the ground. After the Star Show was over, we were dismissed to go check out little space things, in a room behind us. I found my friends, and then we checked it out together.

6th Grade Orientation

On January 28th 2016, most of the 5th graders from the Clayton school district, went to Wydown Middle school, because there was a 6th grade orientation to get 5th graders ready to go to Middle School. At the beginning of the orientation when the parents and students walked in some people from Wydown passed out a sheet of paper telling which group you were in. When the orientation started the Middle school principal made an announcement, and greeting students when everybody was situated. She introduced some of the Wydown middle school teachers. After a little bit, three 6th grade kids, that talked about middle school. The first person was really humorous, and exaggerated a lot in an HILARIOUS sort of way. The second person was a girl named Sahi. She is one of my best friends (Ava’s) she sounded pretty good. The third person was a girl named Gabriella. She did pretty good too. After all of the announcements, we were dismissed to leave and go to our groups. Ava and I (Iris) were in the same group: Group D.

My friend Claudia and Seraphina were in the same group: Group A. There were some 8th graders leading the groups. We first went to math.

In math, we found out STARTLING news. We. Had. Homework. on. The. Weekends. Inside, Iris and I ‘s (Ava) heads we were screaming. As you could have probably seen, we do not like math that much, we like simple things in math, but still.

After the Math discussion, we went to Elective Choices and we got to choose which electives we were thinking about doing in middle school. Iris chose drama and music. I chose (Ava) art and music.

After Electives, we went to Social Studies, where they did an AMAZING skit about what we were going to do in that year of middle school. Ava and I (Iris) were literally laughing so hard that Ava got the hiccups.

After Social Studies, we went to Literacy. were they showed us a video, were 6th graders talked about fun things to do in Literacy. I could tell that Ava was excited to do this because she loves to read and write.

After Literacy, we went to Science, were we found out that we were going to go to a fun field trips. Where we get to try to find FOSSILS! We both thought that it was going to be cool and interesting.

After science, we went to Language Arts. There was an option between French and or Spanish. Iris is thinking about doing French, and I (Ava) am thinking about doing spanish, just because I already know how to talk in spanish, because all of the 1st grade students, through 5th grade students, learn the language.

After the tour of Wydown, everybody went home, Ava and I thought that it would be a little bit scary, but we also thought that it could be fun.

Instead of going to Hidden Valley, I just stayed at school and helped 4th grade. I usually stay at school to help classes every year when there is a field trip. In 3rd grade I stayed and helped 1st grade instead of going to Meramec Caverns. And last year in 4th grade, I stayed and helped 1st grade again instead of going to Jefferson City. Yesterday, I just helped Mrs. Hallan's class. But since nobody needed help, I just did some math, read my book and worked on Social Studies Homework. I basically had to go to specials with them, go to recess with them, and well, did everything that they did. It was a little weird because people might have been scared of me just because I am a 5th grader, but really, they should not be scared of me at all! It just could have been I was taller than a lot of them, but still! I hoped that they liked me and I would be happy to do it again any time.

I wonder if next year, you have to go to the field trips?

One Little Word: Ava

My one little word is interest because, I get interested in many thing, like swimming, Cooking, Jogging… But to add to my one little word, I chose it to be unique. (Darn it! I could have done Unique for my one little word!) But, I also would like to know other people's interests. So I could try them out. (But I am not very good at any…) But, that is my one little word reasoning.

CLAYMO Leader Experience.

In 4th grade, I was so excited to be a CLAYMO leader.  But I was also super nervous because it is a big job and you have to be responsible and be careful, AND be able to calm down kids who feel left out of are confused. But now that I know how to do all of those things, I feel like I am almost a pro at this kind of thing! (Notice how I said ALMOST…) One thing that I would like to happen is more time to prepare. We usually get a sheet, go home and read it while taking notes, but we do not get to practice with real life kids! And you do not have the materials at home to test it to make sure you are doing the right thing… I just  sometimes think that there is  some kind  of pressure,and by pressure, I mean if you mess up in front of your CLAYMO group, they will WATCH you mess up. I have done it so many times… Once, I accidentally said the Pledge Of Allegiance instead of the CLAYMO promise! I was very embarrassed

My goals for future meetings are to notice if a little kid is frustrated when we are doing a group project. Because today, one 3rd grader got frustrated because he got a job that was small and he felt that other kids got better jobs than him. So I decided that he should help with the big jobs.

Another goal for the future is to be more confident, because I am always very nervous when we are about to do a CLAYMO meeting. Like today. I was practically shaking because I was scared that I was going to mess up. But you just have to take deep breaths before you say hello to your group.

I wonder if I am doing a good job being a CLAYMO leader? I wonder what I can do to change?

Today, We did a project with the book  The Tale Of Despereaux. We showed a video about courage, and how Despereaux had the courage to shine light on an evil mouse… Well,we basically talked about courage and examples of courage. At the end, we all made a poster about the book and we used objects from the book. There was a cauldron saying “Courage Soup” and there was Despereaux’s head that the little kids colored and there was a castle, and a book.

I would say that being a CLAYMO leader taught me about responsibility, and curiousness. I am excited about future meetings, and learning more about my group.

100 Word Challenge: Ava

The Derpy llama was very sacred to the Disney family. That is why Ava is so obsessed with Derp faces and llamas. It all started when the Disney’s first Disney Lamberting the third was getting attacked by an evil llama. But then the llama called for backup and then disappeared.

But then, A nice llama apologized for all of the llamas behavior and then flew away. That left Lamberting with a derpy smile spred accross his face. He also was a spy for llama inc. 10 years later. So that is why Ava Disney is very obsessed with llamas and Derp faces. It is littarley in her blood! :P

100 WORD CHALLENGE

It always seems like all of the bugs in the world are in my bedroom even though they aren't. I am personally scarred by bugs, they are creepy, crawly, SLIMY little demons. It all started with a piece of lint. My sister scares me with a fake object that looks like a bug. Today, she used a piece of lint. Very original. She put one on my computer and chuckled. She was up to something. I just knew it.

So later that night, I forgot about the “bug” so, I touched it when I was lifting up the lid. So after all of that trauma, I am scarred.

I saw something move in the shadows. It was Evil, and lurking around in the darkness, It darted around in circles around me, but pretty soon It stopped. I wondered why and what the thing was doing. But I did not have to wait long, I heard the cold, deep pounding breathes of the evil wizard. “Avadacadabra!”

It sounded like a magical spell. “WHOOSH!” suddenly, I saw the creature, It was a skeleton. But a lot um…. Eviler? Creepier? SCARIER? It’s red eyes stared deep into my soul, Pulling out my identedney, my life, my memories. I was paralyzed.

And she just would not stop crying…

Her dog was her best friend. He was always right there by her side. During thunderstorms, Doctors visits, (crazy right?) and when she went to bed. But everything changed when she woke up that morning. Usually her dog was right  there when she woke up every morning, but, he was’nt! She started to panic ‘what if he is hurt?’ or ‘is he okay?’ thoughts spun around the girl’s head as she told her parents what has happened. They said that they did not know where the dog was. This was a strange mystery...

Our Science project is a project that you can make your own, There are different  types of projects that you can choose from a sheet of paper. We both chose ‘Alien’  but there were : Alien , Stars  Tour Guide, Brochure, Free choice, Eclipses, Astronomy history, Constellations & The Big Question!

For Ava’s Alien project I did a cute alien with puppy dog eyes. It looks like a blob of color in pink and blue. They can float with a body of a cloud. They live on Neptune too! I also made a brochure telling the reader what my alien looks like and what it is. My favorite part of my alien was probably the drawing in the brochure. They have cute little cloud houses that float because Neptune is made of gasses and ice. They are also best friends with iris’s alien the saturnians. And I think that it is pretty cool :) This is what Ava’s Alien looks like:

Iris’s aliens are called the Saturnians. They live on Saturn and they have a tail to swim through the gasy surface of Saturn. They can also fly with their beautimus wings though tough storms of Saturn. They are besties with the Bopz a.k.a. Ava’s  alien. They girls have 1 tail and 1 pair of wings. And the boys have 2 tails and also 1 pair of wings. They soar around the galaxy shipping packages and mailing letters to friends and visiting them. Here is what they look like:

Here is a free choice. In free choice, you can basically do whatever you would like to do! But it has to be based off of astronomy.

Here is a tour guide. In a tour guide, you can choose a couple planets and research and then  tie it all together in a brochure.

Brochure:

Here is a brochure. In a brochure, you can research a planet and put interesting facts about that planet into a brochure.

The Glenridge fifth grade is putting on a play, and the auditions are in the music room

courtesy of Mrs Williams. The fifth graders have a vocal audition and a memorization audition. The vocal auditions are for singing, and what you do in the vocal audition is you sing a small part from a song in the play. In the memorization audition you memorize a paragraph from a packet that the fifth graders have already gotten.

This is a fun way to practice music and drama because Glenridge does not have a drama club/class. The fifth graders are going to work very hard for this play to happen for you and Glenridge.

I wonder if the play will be a success?

Claymo: Web Activity

Our class (5B) went to Tillis Park on August 27 from 9:00 to 3:00, 2015. We did a Claymo retreat in order to celebrate a new year of Claymo Fith Graders. One activity in the retreat was the ending. The ending was an activity called the web. The web is an activity where you get a ball of yarn, and you loop it around you finger, so it wont fall of when you throw it to the next person. When you ave the ball of yarn, the person who trows the ball of yarn gets to say a nice thing that the have noticed that is a good property of being of a Claymo leader. After they are done saying something nice about you, you get to pick someone to say something nice to. This goes on and on and on until everyone got something nice said to. in the end, there is a big web of yarn, that's why it's called the web! You get a yarn bracelet to wear for the entire year and if you do, you get a prize!
